COLLOQUIUM Tuesday January 18th, 2011 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Room SB 2068B Ken Burch Department of Physics, University of Toronto “MANIPULATING AND PROBING MATERIALS ON THE NANOSCALE” The understanding of materials and their wide variety of properties has challenged scientists since the ancient greeks. In addition to the scientific challenges posed by condensed matter physics, it also offers important technological advances in energy efficiency and computing. In this talk I will describe our groups efforts to produce materials with desired properties on the nanoscale. Furthermore I will discuss how these advances are opening up new opportunities to approach long standing problems in condensed matter. Particular focus will be given to our efforts to make and measure nanoscale devices out of high temperature superconductors.
