First person

Past tense

Attention to detail

3. As a class, scaffold the opening to this account. Below is a transcript of the first part of the clip:

I’ve always wanted to be a star, a hero! Did I win a battle? No. Did I help someone? Well, not someone, more like a few thousand!

The morning began by me getting up early, making my bed, milking the goat and making my sandwiches. OK I lied, I had to be kicked out of bed, forced to milk the goat, and mum made my sandwiches as I couldn’t be bothered. No hero’s perfect!

4. Main task:

Write your own account of the Feeding of the 5000, form the boy’s point of view, starting from the end of the scaffold.

Remember to:

Include detail,

How he would have felt

5. Plenary:

1. Discuss what the class knows about speech to build up their own success criteria:

 Put “……..” around what the speaker says.

A new speech sentence starts with a capital letter.

Speech marks go outside other punctuation.

Separate what was said by the speaker with a comma, unless there is already a ? or a !

Start a new paragraph if a sentence has a new speaker saying something.

2. Either give them a copy of the passage below to punctuate, or ask them to copy it out correctly.

3. Plenary: Go through the passage together, marking the punctuation and discussing issues that may have arisen.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, Matthew 14:13-21, adapted

Let’s go and find Jesus. I’m sure he went that way, said someone in the crowd. Jesus spoke to the crowd and healed their sick. He had compassion on them. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said it’s a long way from their villages, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go home to eat. Jesus replied, they do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. They answered, there’s a boy here who’s offered us his lunch - five loaves of bread and two fish. Bring them here to me, Jesus said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves, saying thank you Father for all that you have given us. Then he gave

them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

They all ate and were satisfied. This is delicious, they all said. The disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
