Read & React Offense Clinic UW – Wisconsin October 2015 Layers 1 and 2 are about beating the first two levels of the defense. Layers 3-4 are about reacting to situations the defense gives you. The R&R is about positionless basketball Layer 1 – Cuts - Cut hard. Cut to score - If you share the ball, you get the first scoring opportunity by getting it back. - Cut hard and then make a decision for your next action. - Shoot for front cuts but if they jump to the ball, settle for rear cuts. - Don’t give up on your cut. Finish it because you might get it back late. Rebounding – If you are above the FT line when the ball is shot, get back. If you are below, rebound Read Line - Get a read line on your defender. Hunt it - If you fill a spot and your defender is chasing, curl it. Rip against the grain - Catch, rip and go when fill a spot - Use the momentum of the defender against them. When do you have the “Green Light To Go” - Meaning drive to the basket - Indirect way to score - When you see an empty side, attack(Real Estate) - Draft Drives – Drive off the tail of the cutter - Oops Screen – A pass and cut ball screen. Get in the way of the ball handlers defender. - Attack Close Outs – Attack defenders front foot. Double Dribble At’s – Many times, you will get the second cutter on the fill and back cut. The Wisconsin Women do not let the ball touch the floor after they score in 5 on 0 Cutting – Do not dip your toe in the lane when you cut. Put your head in the basket. Defection Game – 5 on 5 - 1 pt for a basket - Defense gets 2 pts for a deflection - Extra points if they score off a certain action. We need to be able to handle the pressure defense one spot away from the ball. - Dribble At - Read Line Cut - Dribble Hand Off When teaching the offense, the first decision you give them is am I going to cut and fill out or am I going to cut and post up. 5 on 0 Pass and Post - Keep going until all have had a chance to post up. - Fan it out to the other side after the laker cut Pin and Fan – Hit the post, laker cut on ball side, pin and skip on the weak side. Fan it to the weak side after the cutter clears the laker cut. On the Laker Cut, require the post to fake the pass to the cutter and score the other way. Dribble At – Make the pass after one dribble or the window will close. - Score off a double dribble at Bounce Off’s – This is nothing but getting stopped on a drive but keeping your dribble and bouncing out to keep the offense moving. Reverse Pivot – When teaching it, think of it as a spin dribble that stops half way. 5 on 0 Bounce Off Drill - 3 Bounce Off’s then score - Hit the safety valve - Hit the natural pitch - 5 on 5 Bounce Off makes the defense help and recover. - 41 Set Bounce Off – Makes the post react - Bounce Off and be cleaver – Your defender will close out on you. This is a great time to attack them. Attack the front foot. Shoot it if they do not close the gap. 5 on 0 Pass and Cut with Bounce Off’s - Make a drive and kick to finish 3 Person Perimeter Drill – Dribble At/Post/Drive & Kick Sprint Ball Screen- The Ball Handler will stand up and back up dribble. This is a signal for the post to sprint out and set a ball screen. Full Court Trips - Yell out what they need to score off of each trip - They must pass, cut and play a little before they can score. - Start with 3 trips then advance to 6. - Laker Cuts, Dribble At, Natural Pitch, BL Drive - Make the players have to call out what they are going to score off of. The Wisconsin Women call out everything. Fill, DA Some youth coaches will use R&R actions as sets. - 1 is Pass and Cut - 2 is Dribble At - 3 is stop and post up. Color Codes - Green is GO – No screens - Purple is Punish – Screens - Blue is Ball Screens - Yellow is slow down – Delay Game - Red is no shots unless a lay-up - Gold Alex is Golden Child. Get him or her open by screening or DA him/her to get them in the post. 5 on 5 Bingo From ½ Court - Everything is live until the coach’s signal then live. - Shell until a post touch, bounce off, dribble at, pin and skip, draft drive Sometimes you may want to delay your filling action. This will open up real estate to attack off the dribble. If you go against a team that really blocks cuts, you can stop and back screen(Corner). The person with the ball can also look to draft drive. This might cause an OOPS screen as well. Cut Your Hair, Sweep The Floor – Every time you catch, you must sweep and rip. This slows the ball down If the defense goes for a defection on the fill cut and misses, Catch, Sweep and Go. 3 Person Drill – Catch/Sweep/Go/Natural Pitch - The 3 must fill up then reverse direction of the drive Good Action – Draft Drive off a Read Line back cut. - Very difficult for the defender guarding the cutter to defend the back cut and help on the drive. - Drill It – Fill Cut/Back/Cut/Draft Drive 5 on 0 Into 5 on 5 – 5 on 0 Full Court trip, when they come back for second trip, the defense will be waiting for them to go 5 on 5. There are 12 different ways you can score using only the first 3 payers of the R&R Attacking Close-Outs – Attack where the defenders back is pointing. Attack their front foot. Don’t let the players get caught up in the Pass and Cut layer as being the offense. They must be attackers off the dribble. The P&C action opens up doors for driving. When they go 5 on 5, if they score off that action, they get an extra point. * 5 on 0 Pin Screens - Pass and Cut. Set a pin and skip it. - Everyone needs a turn passing, cutting and setting a pin screen from the top. - Variation – After the skip, add a BL drive. They all must react with circle movement. * 4 OUT Pin Screen & Skip Drill - All must take a turn at the post spot. Rotate around the circle. * Have each team work on a specific action on either end.
