Methods of Teaching Physical Education Daily Lesson Plan Name: Abigail Beesley Date: November 9, 2010 Unit Topic: Sport Skills- Team- Volleyball Skill/Concept: Rules, Techniques, Volleying, Serving, Spike, Block, Recovery, and Strategy Concepts Lesson Time: 90 minutes Number of Students: 25 Grade Level: 6 - 8 Equipment: Volleyball, nets, cones Media: Teaching Style: Command/Direct COS Objective: Physical Education, Grade 6, 2009 4.) Demonstrate forehand and backhand striking skills. Physical Education, Grade 7, 2009 7.) Identify appropriate drills and repetitions to improve performance. Physical Education, Grade 8, 2009 4.) Demonstrate skills used in individual, dual, and team sports. Specific Objectives: Psychomotor: Upon completion of this lesson on blocking, students will be able to accurately demonstrate stance and approach to the block. Cognitive: By the end of the lesson on blocking, the student will be able to recognize when the time is right to make a block and also understand the appropriate footwork to the block. Affective: As a result of this lesson on blocking, the student will feel confident with his or her ability to perform the block and also show positive, upbeat attitude about learning and perfecting the block. Introduction Activity: Drill (5mins) Using both courts, students will line up in one row of six students on the attack line in front of the cone. The students will get in ready position: feet should width apart, knees slightly bent, arms bent, but not extended and hands up. When the whistle is blown, the students will sprint to the net and vertically jump so their hands will extend over the net and their wrist will flick. The students will then come back down into the ready position. On the next whistle, the student will then diagonally move to the right to the next cone and get in ready position. Repeat. Fitness Development: Around the World (5 mins) Divide students up into groups of 4. Have to groups of 4 get into push-up position in the form of a circle, with their feet in the center of the circle and their heads on the outside. The students will pass the ball under their bodies around the circle and count how many times the ball goes around the circle in 30 seconds. After those 30 seconds, the ball will be passed in the other direction as they count again. Lesson Focus: Volleyball (60 mins) 1. Introduce students to volleyball; Explain all rules; Explain the basic techniques of volleyball 2. Question what they learned (rules and techniques); Demonstrate/explain serving 3. 4. 5. 6. Partner students up to serve the ball; back and forth to each other; Students line up along baselines at both ends and serve ball to other students; Gather students at end to demonstrate what they've learned and question them Demonstrate/explain passing and the reasons for passing; Partner students up to pass the ball back and forth to each other; Now, students can play small games using only serving and passing to get the hang of game-like situations Demonstrate/explain setting and the reasons for setting; Partner students up to set the ball back and forth to each other; set up combination drills: server, passer, and setter. Students will rotate at the end; students can play live games using what they've learned so far. Demonstrate/explain spiking and the reasons for spiking; Set up combination drills: server, passer, setter, and spiker. Students will rotate now that students know the basic skills of volleyball; they are ready to play live games to get out any kinks. Keep working rotational drills with students to warm up progress into live games. Students can take turns being referees and line judges since they now know the rules of the game. Closing Activity: Simulation (20 mins) Students will split up in teams and put all their skills and techniques together.
