My Life in Literary Terms
Poetry Assignment
Purpose To create a poem about yourself using literary terms, while exploring definitions, and providing descriptions
for your artistic choices.
Assignment Components
1. From the list below, identify 10 literary terms that you will incorporate into your project. Please take a moment to
highlight them now.
Allegory, Alliteration, Allusion, Anaphora, Diction, Assonance, Atmosphere, Tone, Figurative Language, Imagery,
Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Personification, Hyperbole, Repetition, Symbolism, Simile, Parallel Structure, Rhyme,
Oxymoron
2. Define the terms in your own words in a full sentence. (Bonus: You now know 10/20 terms for our literary devices
quiz) Exemplar of a definition in my own words: “A metaphor is often used in literature to make a direct comparison
between two different things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as.’”
3. Practice creating literary devices that relate to and express details about you and your life. Exemplars: “I am a torn
leaf, floating down the rivers, drinking in water” or “Reading is my breath, without it, I would surely not survive.”
4. Construct a poem using your 10 literary devices. Using the examples of prominent poetry read in class as a guide,
create a meaningful poem with your words to express your life. Identify the tone and voice to your poem so the
devices are connected through meaning and not disjointed examples. Develop your poem by experimenting with
elevated language choosing words with purpose.
5. Provide an informative full sentence description of how each of these literary devices applies to your life.
Exemplar: “Reading is my breath, without it, I would surely not survive.” is a metaphor used to demonstrate how
avidly I read. I am making the comparison between breathing and reading to convey its importance to my life.
6. Create an aesthetically pleasing method to display your poem in a way that represents who you are. Using fonts,
colour, paper shape, and design, you will visually compliment the essence of your poem. You must include an
image that signifies a relationship to the poem on your display. Your image can be hand-drawn, a published piece
of art, a personal photograph, a graphic image, etc… Exemplar: As an English teacher, I may choose to include a
picture of me as a child reading my first novel and design my font and page to look like an old favourite book.
7. Attach this sheet to your assignment and hand in on ____________________________.
