He was a remarkable preacher of the 19th century, proclaiming the Gospel “even to the ends of the earth”: to the Aleutian islands; in the six dialects of the tribes on the island of Sitka; among the Tlingit; and in the remotest settlements of the extensive Russian Alaskan lands. He translated the Gospel and religious works into the Aleut language. He then served the church as Bishop of Moscow and fell asleep in the Lord on March 31, 1879. St. Gregory Palamas St. Gregory Palamas was a 14th century monk who spent most of his life on Mount Athos. Described as “one of the most renowned Byzantine theologians of all ages,” he championed the practice of hesychasm during a great 14th century controversy in the Church. Hesychasm is an ascetic practice of prayer in which one seeks inner stillness and cleansing from passions, which lead to mystical union with God. The repetition of the “Jesus Prayer” is a hesychastic practice. Here are some words of St. Gregory and others on hesychasm: It is the “holy silence,” the “art of arts”’ It can bestow “rest in God in the midst of an intense daily struggle” The Jesus Prayer contains the whole Gospel It is a means of making the grace of baptism real and efficacious “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (the Jesus Prayer) Weekly Schedule Today, Sunday, March 31……………………9:30 am – 3rd and 6th Hours St. Gregory Palamas 10:00 am – Divine Liturgy Wednesday, Aprll 3……………………………7:00 – Presanctified Liturgy followed by a pot luck Lenten meal His Grace, Bishop MICHAEL, Bishop of New York and the Diocese of New York and New Jersey, will be present.
