ENGLISH II SYLLABUS Fall 2015/Spring 2016 CONTACT INFORMATION Mrs. Shannon Schulter Warren East High School/Classroom #320 (270) 781-1277 Shannon.Schulter@warren.kyschools.us COURSE DESCRIPTION This course integrates the study of literature and language including grammar review in preparation for the EOC (End of Course Exam) and On Demand tests in May. Your score on the EOC counts as 10% of your final grade. Components of the ACT Exam are also incorporated. PRIMARY COURSE OBJECTIVE English II will provide challenging lessons that cause higher-level thinking and promote increased analysis of literature, along with review of ACT concepts, including reading strategies and grammatical review. INDIVIDUAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • Annotate a literary text, Read and analyze different genres, Make warranted and logical assertions about an author’s arguments, Write essays effectively, Recognize and use literary terms, Apply literary terminology to different genres, Understand and use documentation Answer multiple-choice questions similar to EOC exam, and Use technology to complement an understanding of literature. Rulers 3-hole punch WISH LIST Tissues Hand Sanitizer **Literature study focuses on works of different genres, varied authors, and specific literary elements. Composition focuses on effective writing through a variety of essays, response writings, and MLA documentation practice. There will be various other works not mentioned. UNIT BREAKDOWN Each unit will have a unit schedule that will contain specific objectives and connections to the Common Core Standards and Quality Core Standards. The unit schedule will break down specific topics that we will be covering day by day, and periodically, grammar concepts found on the ACT test will be incorporated. You will be aware of assessments, projects, and assignments throughout each unit. There will be an End of the Course Assessment that will be discussed more in depth at a later date, and concepts taught during all units will be covered on the assessment. GRADE DISTRIBUTION (100% Total) *All assignments will have point values dependent on the characteristics of the assignment. Points available will be teacher discretion per assignment. Summative assessments will be worth more points. Bellwork will be given every day and will be factored into the participation grade, along with chosen class discussions and activities. Makeup work not received within a school week of your missed days will be marked down a letter grade each day it is late. FIVE DAYS should be plenty of time for this work to be completed. If there’s a problem, you need to come see me. HOMEWORK Students will receive homework assignments every Tuesday and Thursday, unless otherwise noted by the teacher. These homework assignments will not be lengthy, with most assignments taking only 10-15 minutes. The purpose of the assignments is for students to reflect on concepts important to English II class and practice ideas that they will see on future tests (EOC, ON DEMAND, and ACT). Homework will be considered a formative assessment and used a tool to guide student understanding. EXTRA CREDIT There will only be two opportunities for extra credit throughout the year. There will be bonus questions found on tests. These questions will be based on the content/purpose of the assessment. The second opportunity will occur once a quarter and will be a poetry explication (written analysis) of a given poem. Extra credit will not exceed 3% of the student’s overall grade. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND PLAGIARISM All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with school regulations and procedures. You will get in trouble for plagiarism—even if you do not intend to cheat—by failing to correctly indicate places where you are making use of the work of another. We will talk more about citing sources throughout the year. SPECIAL NOTE Although this class will be challenging, I will do my best to make it as fun as possible. If you give me effort, I will notice it, and I promise you will learn a lot. If you ever need help with anything, feel free to let me know, and I will be glad to help you.
