AP Psychology 2015-2016 M. Foster 698-8121 x6314 Mari.Foster@wuhsd.org Course Description The AP Psychology course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields, including neuroanatomy, sensation and perception, consciousness, lifespan development, cognition, individual differences, and social psychology. They also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice. This course aims to provide a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in an introductory college course and is, therefore, rigorous and challenging. All students enrolled in the course should expect to sit for the Advanced Placement Psychology exam in May 2016. Class Policies Students are expected to behave appropriately at all times. School policies regarding attendance, tardiness and academic integrity will be enforced. Electronic devices may not be used for personal reasons during instructional time. Students may not leave their seats without permission. Food and drink are not allowed in the classroom. Students may not deface any of the physical surfaces in the room. Abusive, profane or disrespectful language is not permitted. Behavior must reflect respect for teaching, learning, and others. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in parental contact, teacher detention and/or counselor referral. Recommended Materials Students are expected to come to class prepared. Materials needed each day include: Textbook: David Myers, Exploring Psychology (7th ed.), 2008. Pen/Pencil/Highlighter Spiral Notebook Looseleaf paper/ 3x5 Index Cards Course Requirements Students are required to maintain a notebook, complete assigned work as indicated in the course syllabus and participate in class activities. Students will be assessed on a weekly basis through a variety of methods, including quizzes, essays, objective exams and projects. Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Late work will be accepted until the end of each instructional unit for half-credit only. Students who are absent for a scheduled test have one week to take the exam. Extra-credit opportunities are available to the entire class on a frequent basis.
