Math 1021 College Algebra Online Course Summer 2011 For the last three years, the LSU Department of Mathematics has offered one section of Math 1021 College Algebra (3 credit hours) completely online. This summer it will be offered during the five-week session June 6 to July 9. It will be open to any LSU student, but the target audience is incoming Fall 2011 freshmen who want to be science majors and have a Math ACT score of 22 or below. Most science majors should be ready to enroll in Chem 1201 (General Chemistry I) for Fall 2011. All science and mathematics majors should be ready to enroll in Math 1022 (Trigonometry) for Fall 2011. In order to qualify to enroll in either Chem 1201 or Math 1022, a student must have earned credit in Math 1021 (College Algebra). By earning credit in Math 1021 during the summer, a student will qualify to enroll in Math 1022 for Fall 2011. Additionally, students in majors requiring Chem 1201 will qualify to take both Math 1022 and Chem 1201 concurrently during Fall 2011. Here is an overview of the Math 1021 College Algebra Online course design. Class does not ever meet face-to-face and there are no required lab hours. Video lectures produced by LSU faculty are available online for all sections of the course. All homework, tests, and the final exam will be completed by students online using a web-based learning and assessment system called MyMathLab. The cost for access to this system is $105. An interactive eText written specifically to be used within MyMathLab is included within the price as well as a paper eText reference, so there is no paper textbook to purchase. Class notes are available and contain important theorems, formulas, and definitions as well as cautions about most commonly misunderstood concepts. Homework can be completed online from any web-based computer from the beginning of the semester until the stated due dates for each assignment. Two tests and the final exam must be taken at the LSU Himes Hall Testing Center on the LSU campus. These tests and the final exam can be scheduled online on a date and time at the student’s convenience as long as they are completed by the stated due dates. The last day to take Test #1 is Friday, June 17. The last day to take Test #2 is Friday, July 1, and the last day to take the final exam is Saturday, July 9. A non-graphing calculator with logarithmic and exponential capabilities is required. Multi-view calculators and calculators with symbolic notation or natural display capabilities are not allowed. Homework makes up 25% of the final grade, and the two tests and the final exam each make up another 25% of the final grade. The grading scale is A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, and F=0-59%.
