Sonnet 19
Performance as an approach
You can find the sonnet here:
http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/19.html
We are going to treat the poem as a script. We shall act it out!
In pairs / small groups, you will be given one or two lines to perform.
You will also be responsible for teaching your line(s) to the rest of the
class.
We shall then perform the whole poem.
Pair Work
Create a motion to accompany every word in your line(s).
Be prepared to teach your set of motions to the class.
Audience
For whom do you think the poem was written?
What is the purpose of the poem?
Based on this discussion, are there any changes we would like to make
to the motions we have created / any motions we have used for
duplicated words?
Whole Class
Perform the complete motion-poem!
Individual Work
Write reflection on the activity:
How have motions helped us to understand the poem?
How might we use these to understand other poems (language as
representation of physical reality / presence of speaker and audience /
purpose of poetry)?
