The South Carolina Society was organized April 18th,
1889 in a room at the State Capital in Columbia. The
South Carolina Society began granting charters to
chapters in 1923. Currently twenty chapters promote
the American spirit through fraternal meetings,
commemorative observances of events and battles,
educational materials, projects, lectures, tours and
publications. South Carolina is rich in historical events
of the American Revolution. From the mountains to the
coast, South Carolina experienced the most battles and
skirmishes of the war. The twenty chapters of our
society sponsor annual anniversary ceremonies of many
of the battles and events. Since the organization of the
South Carolina Society, over 3,000 have filled the
membership ranks. Currently our members
number over 850 through out the state of South
Carolina.

The American Flag is the living symbol of our national
heritage reminding us of America’s greatness and our fortune
to live in a country that values freedom. Our flag signifies the
commitments of our fallen soldiers and all who served to
bravely defend the honor of our country. The flag is our
sacred emblem of American unity and purpose and
exemplifies the commitment of our leaders to uphold the
promise of liberty, justice and freedom for all.
“As part of the Sons of the American Revolution mission to
preserve our American heritage we honor and recognize
organization that demonstrates respect for the flag of our
nation by furthering the customs and traditions which
surround the proper display and use of the American Flag
The NSSAR Color Guard is the most
visible public face of the NSSAR. Color
Guardsmen provide an easily identifiable
and colorful focal point at parades and
memorial events. The variety of uniforms
and flags invite children, spectators, and
potential members to come forward and
ask questions about the American
Revolution
One of the many activities of the Sons of
the American Revolution is identifying
and marking grave sites where
Revolutionary War Patriots are buried.
SAR members honor those who
fought for our freedom with
memorial wreath laying
ceremonies at Revolutionary war
site anniversaries and dedications
of revolutionary war soldiers grave
sites
In 1979 NSSAR moved it National headquarters
from Washington DC to Louisville Kentucky

and Genealogical Research Library
 The library collection has grown to 58,000
items and includes family histories, state
genealogy materials, federal censuses,
Revolutionary War pension applications, and
CD collections. The primary focal point of the
collections is the Revolutionary War period, but
the collection does include other materials of a
genealogical nature. The online catalog allows

SAR teaches you about patriotism
SAR will provide you an opportunity to honor your patriot
ancestor
SAR is a very prestigious organization that includes
membership by 16 U.S. Presidents. Military Generals,
Senators, Congressmen, Members of the U.S. Supreme Court
and other prominent American dignitaries
SAR members have pride in their heritage and a connection
with the spirit of our founding fathers
The SAR gives me a means to honor the sacrifices my ancestors
made in order to establish this great nation. And it gives me an
opportunity to carry forward the ideals upon which it was
founded.
SAR membership is vital at this time in American history. The
focus on political correctness and the de-emphasizing of the
facts in American History in both our society and our schools is
leading to a loss of respect and tradition for the American flag
and Constitutional form of democratic government.
My SAR membership constantly calls to my mind the courage,
the sense of duty and the participation by our early forebears in
creating a nation which is now our responsibility to maintain on
the foundations that they built.
“In these most difficult times for our nation, all our citizens
must be mindful of our heritage and the basic principles under
which America has grown to greatness and prospered in freedom.
I am proud of my membership in the Society of the Sons of the
American Revolution because of the important role the Society
plays in strengthening and preserving the American ideal.”
“The membership in the National Society, SAR, which I have
recently received, serves as a source of strength in these
turbulent times. It provides an awareness of how this nation
came to be, how it struggled for survival and to become free, how
it grew to a position of world leadership, and the necessity of
maintaining those qualities in our individual and national life if
the United States is to continue to be the kind of nation we want
it to be. As I become older, I realize the importance of
impressing these thoughts upon my five children.”
