Aim #7: What factors cause a civilization to change over time? • Do Now: Of the seven characteristics of a civilization that we talked about yesterday, which one do you think is MOST important to the success of a civilization? Are there any that you think are not necessary for the success of a civilization? Are there any you would add that I didn’t include? I. Cultural Diffusion: Spread of ideas and cultures from one place to another. Read the article “100 % American” by Ralph Linton. Answer the following questions: 1. What do you think is the main point of Linton’s article? 2. Based on this article and any other examples you can think of, how does cultural diffusion influence your everyday life? 3. Is cultural diffusion necessary for the progress of a civilization? Why or why not? II. Cultural Acculturation: Changes that happen / take place when two or more cultures come into contact with each other. Two forms of this: 1. Cultural Assimilation 2. Cultural Pluralism III. Cultural Assimilation: When different cultures blend together into one culture (“melting pot”) Examples? IV. Cultural Pluralism: When different cultures live side by side but hold on to their practices and traditions (“salad bowl”). Examples? Question for Discussion • President Obama recently announced that the United States is going to take in 10,000 refugees from Syria. These individuals are fleeing a civil war between the oppressive dictator who runs their country (Bashar al-Assad) and ISIS. Would it be better for these immigrants to be fully assimilated into American society, or should we encourage a more pluralistic society?
