INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TEXAS Texas is the “Lone Star State”. The phrase, Lone Star State comes from when Texas won its independence from Mexico and became an independent republic in 1836. The state flag was created with a lone star to remember the struggle for independence. The name “Texas” is derived from the word “Tejas” which means 'friends' in the Caddo language. You will notice that we are not just the “Lone Star State,” but we are the “Friendly” state.
