This position is newly restructured, with the charge of building a foundation for service-learning at
UTK, which could be later adopted by a civic or community engagement center. Service-learning is a
teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and
reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Responsibilities of the Campus Coordinator for Service Learning include the following:
Serve as a central portal for internal and external constituencies who want to engage in servicelearning
Create standardized service-learning processes to facilitate partnerships between faculty,
students, and community members/organizations
Consult with faculty on service-learning course design and best practices
Develop resources to support and promote service-learning partnerships and enable best
practices
Collaborate with university personnel and community partners to increase the scope and
impact of service-learning through advocacy, promotion, and grant-writing
Organize and spearhead service-learning projects with targeted campus and community
partners
Publicize service-learning offerings and opportunities for partnerships
Organize networking events to connect internal and external stakeholders
Enlist the work of Campus Compact VISTA staff, student workers, and interns to help build a set
of resources and services for service-learning

Founded Student Forum on Learning and guided its activities, including the development of a
white paper on students’ ownership over their learning and development, to 1) facilitate
faculty, staff, and administrators in better understanding students and meeting their needs, and
2) integrate ongoing conversations with students into decision-making processes as they relate
to student learning and development
Co-authored benchmarking paper examining high-research, land grant institutions in 1)
commitment to institutionalized community engagement and 2) implementation structures for
achieving it
Co-designed and delivered workshops for faculty, advisors and students on topics related to
teaching and learning, including service-learning pedagogy
Co-authored Marketing Analysis section of the Community Engagement Task Force Business
Plan to compare UTK’s engagement efforts to the Top 25 Public Institutions
Coordinated and served on UT Learning Consortium to facilitate increased collaboration and
more efficient innovation across learner-focused centers and units
Coordinated workshops and trainings, and developed related resources including “How To”
pedagogy pages, in line with strategic planning initiatives
Designed and developed Tenn TLC promotion and communication materials, including The
Creative Professor newsletter; publicized opportunities, happenings, and accomplishments to
broaden reach of teaching and learning message
Designed and built two customized Access databases to track training participation and
consultations and created reports to facilitate assessment of impact
Co-authored professional publications; presented at professional conferences
Maintained Tenn TLC website, managed electronic event registration, and posted resources
Completed faculty inquiry group “Acting Principles Applied to Teaching” (led by Associate
Professor Jed Diamond, Spring 2011)

Tennessee Nutrition & Consumer Education Program (TNCEP)
Program Assistant

TNCEP is a grant-funded program within UT Extension which delivers nutrition education to families
eligible for government-provided food supplement assistance. Program Assistants work with teachers
at qualifying schools to integrate nutrition into curricula, and conduct nutrition education programs
at identified community organization locations.
As one of two program assistants, helped expand the programs’ teacher partner base from
under 40 to over 120, more than tripling the total number of students exposed to nutrition
education through TNCEP
Planned and coordinated over 250 school-based nutrition education activities, and delivered
over 40 programs at community organizations (e.g. Boys and Girls Clubs, senior centers, and
urban housing community centers)
Collaborated with community partner organizations such as Knox County Schools (KCS) Food
Service, Parks and Recreation, Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC), Knox
County Health Department, and the Department of Human Services (DHS) to increase access
points to wellness education, and establish multi-faceted approaches to community
improvement
