Nasuh started mountain climbing after seeing a notice advertising a new club while studying Management at Bilkent University in Ankara. In Turkey the highest peak is a little less than 4000m, so after graduating in 1992 he went to Kazakhstan to attempt a 7000m peak. Before he set off, he was very (1) doubtful , not knowing how he would (2) proceed to the top, or even whether he would enjoy it. He (3) achieved his goal and realized his talents. Nasuh was the first Turkish person to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1995 and this was a (4) significant occasion in the international arena. There are now 15 Turkish people who have completed this difficult (5) path , but Nasuh believes there should be more. He believes that if there is a proper system in Turkey to encourage our youth, they will (6) prove that they have potential to be successful. “Kendi Everest’inize Tırmanın” is the seventh of his books. The (7) previous ones have discussed everything from his alpine adventures to motor biking through Asia to the NGO he founded – the volunteer search and rescue association, AKUT. When two young climbers were lost in 1994–probably they were (8) headed in the wrong direction by the storm, a hundred climbers came together to (9) investigate them. Then AKUT was born and soon expanded to help in other situations from floods to earthquake to the Gezi Park protests. His (10) response to the question –what is your personal highlight? - was that “K2. It’s believed to be the most dangerous mountain and I climbed it in 2000 with no oxygen or porters. I tried to (11) maintain the control of myself. Some time I felt bad because I was (12) suffering from extreme cold. It was the hardest challenge of my career. But for me, the greater the challenge, (13) efforts, risk and difficulty, the greater the feelings. I always want to do better than my previous self, and each time I (14) approach my target and succeed, it makes me be more aware of my abilities, and I grow up a little more.” 1 2014 - 2015 SPRING, WEEK 6 READING WORKSHEET 2 YILDIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES B – C LEVEL 2. They usually refer back to words or ideas already written about. When identifying points of reference one should notice whether the reference word is singular or plural, whether the reference word is replacing a noun, verb, time, place, a group of words or a whole phrase or clause that expresses a whole idea. The best way to test which word, words or sentence(s) are replaced by the reference word is to replace the reference word with the word(s) you think it points to and then read the sentences to see if it makes sense in the context. Less than two hours later, the flight commander radioed that he was “completely lost.” Then there was silence. A rescue plane was sent to search for the missing aircraft and it, too, went away. In all, six planes and 27 men vanished that day without a trace. Despite one of history’s most extensive search efforts, involving more than 300 planes and dozens of ships, the Navy was unable to discover even floating wreckage or a telltale oil slick. 4 It is believed that those who work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are not so certain. “Despite efforts by the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard,” NOAA reports, “no reasonable explanation to date has been made for the vanishings.” Because of these uncertainties, private investigators have sought more creative explanations. John Wallace Spencer, author of Limbo of the Lost argues that beings from outer space have established a highly advanced civilization in the unexplored depths of the Atlantic inside the triangle. He suggests that the triangle is the hunting ground of beings from outer space in search of human for their “cosmic zoos.” “It sounds strange,” Spencer admits, “until you realize that it’s the only explanation that covers all the facts.” 2 The legend of the mysterious Bermuda Triangle is one of the strangest of all sea tales. The Bermuda Triangle is a section of the Atlantic Ocean off the south-eastern coast of Florida. A line drawn from Florida to Bermuda, then to Puerto Rico and back to Florida, forms a rough triangle over this segment of ocean. Within this triangle, or very near it, more than fifty ships and airplanes have lost. 3 Officially, the U.S. Navy does not recognize the triangle as a danger zone and the U.S. Coast Guard is convinced that “the majority of disappearances in the triangle can be resulted from the area’s unique environmental features.” These include the swift Gulf Stream current, the unexplored underwater canyons of the Atlantic and the often violent weather patterns within the mystery zone. Then too, the triangle is one of only two places on earth where a compass needle points to true rather than magnetic north. (The other is “The Devil’s Sea,” an equally dangerous zone in the Pacific, southeast of Japan. An expedition into the Devil’s Sea was made to search under the sea by a group of Japanese scientists in 1955. Nothing has been heard of them since. ) Thus, a navigator who does not remember this may find himself well off course. 5 On the other hand, some people don't believe that there is anything extraordinary about the Bermuda Triangle. Thousands of ships and airplanes have passed through the Triangle without encountering trouble. It has also been reported that the Triangle isn't the only place where ships and planes have vanished. Many ships have disappeared all over the world's oceans. 6 Whatever the reasons for these strange happenings, the legend of the Bermuda Triangle remains the strangest of all sea tales. 6 2014 - 2015 SPRING, WEEK 6 READING WORKSHEET 2 YILDIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES B – C LEVEL A.
