School Annual Education Report (AER)
August 14, 2014
Dear Parents and Community Members:
We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information
on the 2013-2014 educational progress for Gladwin Community Alternative High School, also known as
the COOL school. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state
laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability and teacher
quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact the high school principal, Paul Zagata,
for assistance.
The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site
www.gladwinschools.net or you may review a copy in the principal’s office at your child’s school.
The state has identified some schools with the status of Reward, Focus or Priority. A Reward school is
one that is outperforming other schools in achievement, growth, or is performing better than other schools
with a similar student population. A Focus school is one that has a large achievement gap in 30% of its
student achievement scores. A Priority school is one whose achievement and growth is in the lowest 5%
of all schools in the state.
Our school has not been given one of the above mentioned labels. For more information on how our
school compares to others schools and to view other pertinent data visit: https://www.mischooldata.org
Our key challenges for the upcoming year are to address the graduation rate and attendance issues at our
school. In an effort to better serve our community the COOL school will no longer operate out of the
building on West M-61, but rather the students will move into the regular high school. By making this
move more teachers will be involved with the students and strategies to improve the attendance and
graduation rates will be employed. We will continue to use our curriculum question model as a method to
address these issues which includes our tiered intervention strategies to meet the needs of all students.
More emphasis is being placed on instructional practices in the classroom through the use of researched
based instructional practices as found in the research by Dr. Robert Marzano. We are also in the process
of designing curriculum to meet the Common Core State Standards, which focuses more closely on
college readiness skills, as well as the individual needs of each student. We will also incorporate the use
of the PLATO computer program which allows students to earn credits toward graduation at their own
pace with the aid of a classroom teacher.
State law requires that we also report additional information.
PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL
Prior to enrollment at Gladwin Community Alternative High School, students must complete an
application process and meet with administration to determine the best educational plan for the student.
THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
