GLADWIN COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
NEWSLETTER
APRIL, MAY, JUNE 2008
The Gladwin County Genealogical Society has had a busy season.
We road the rails with the movie “The Orphan Train”…
Leo Fitzpatrick entertained us with the Babcock family history and humorous anecdotes
that brought that family to life.
We walked the forest and cut the trees with the lumbermen of early Gladwin County.
A soft spoken, gentle Leo Cripps shared his first hand experience of WWII while driving
a half-track.
The stories of Meredith were entertaining. Was Meredith in Gladwin County or Clare
County? It seems it was determined by which sheriff was nearer.
We have a list of new resources available to new-comers to our genealogy room. Our
group meets the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Gladwin Library, 402 James Robertson
Drive, in the Genealogy Room on the second floor. This room is available to anyone
interested in History or Genealogy. It is a valuable resource for the “just getting started”
as well as those with years of experience. Help is readily available to get started.

One of life’s greatest challenges is to rise as high as we can while keeping both feet
planted on the ground.
OUR VETERANS BOOK on service people who live or have lived in Gladwin County is
completed. We had a great response from the public to aid in compiling this book. We
have since received additional information about people to include. We will be
compiling a second volume. We will continue to seek information for those vets we
missed in volume one. We will let it be known when volume one is available for
purchase.
THANK YOU workers/volunteers, especially Hannah Smith and her husband Stan. It
took many hours to accomplish.
We have transcribed Mc Clure, Ridge, Grout, Arbutus and Sherman Township (Skeels)
Cemeteries. We will be completing Beaverton City Cemetery this month.
Gladwin County Obituaries Index is near completion from 1878-Current as taken from
the Gladwin County Record.
Work is ongoing on the Cradle Roll from 1878 forward. Nice work by the Cripps and
Malletts. Thank you.
DO YOU KNOW how Riley Hill acquired it’s name? James Riley was one of the first
settlers. It was reported he lived to nearly 100 years. When he first came to Gladwin in
the 1860’s, only vast wilderness greeted him. Travel was by canoe or foot trails. His
wife was the first person to be interred in the Gladwin Township Cemetery (Ridge
Cemetery).
(The above information was orally submitted by Jerry Smith, a frequent user of the
Genealogy Room.) Thanks Jerry.

A little girl asked her mother, “How did the human race appear?”
The mother answered, “God made Adam and Eve and they had children and then all
mankind was made.”
Two days later the girl asked her father the same question.
The father answered, “Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race
evolved.
The confused girl returned to her mother and said, “Mom, how is it possible that you told
me the human race was created by God, and Dad said they developed from monkeys?”
The mother answered, “Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the
family and your dad told you about his.”
Your children make it impossible to regret your past.
