Ethics in Action: Current Trends, Decision Making and Practice Target Audience This program is designed for mental health professionals, substance abuse professionals, psychologists, and counselors. Other interested professionals are invited to attend. Program Description Mental health practitioners are often faced with situations which require sound ethical decision making ability. Determining the appropriate course to take when faced with a challenging ethical dilemma can be difficult. In this workshop participants will explore characteristics of ethical practitioners, discuss standards, practical use, and current trends in ethical decisions. Topics covered include sexual relations, confidentiality, supervision, receiving gifts, cultural differences and more. Presenter Dr. Kyla Marie Kurian, PhD, LPC, NCC, is a graduate of the counselor education and supervision program from North Carolina State University where she was a Preparing for the Professoriate fellow. Her dissertation focused on understanding the identity formation of Black South African college women. Currently she is an assistant professor in the counselor education program at North Carolina Central University where she has taught for almost 10 years. Dr. Kurian was the recipient of the UNC Center for AIDS Research Grant where she explored the substance use behaviors of atRisk African American College women in preparation for the adaptation of an Evidence-based HIV Intervention. She serves as a contributing editor for the Journal of Psychology in Africa. Dr. Gwendolyn Keith Newsome, PhD, NCC, LPCS, is a Counselor Educator at North Carolina Central University, where she is the Clinical Mental Health Coordinator. She is the current ethics chair of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors (NCBLPC). She also has an active parttime mental health practice in Raleigh, North Carolina. In In affiliation with Duke University Medical Center Part of the NC AHEC Program addition, she has worked with the Veteran’s Administration through the Raleigh Vet Center where she provided counseling services to veterans and their families. Dr. Newsome has served on the executive board of the North Carolina Counseling Association and has presented on the international, national and local level on topics related to professional counseling ethics, stress, multicultural concerns trauma and veteran issues. Objectives Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Describe the difference between ethical and unethical mental health professionals; List five Trends & Changes in Ethics and Practice of Psychotherapy & Counseling; List steps in ethical decision making; and Describe a step-by-step strategy in making ethical decisions. Credits 0.4 CEUs and 4.0 contact hours credit will be awarded to participants who attend 100% of the program. Southern Regional AHEC adheres to NAADAC Education Provider Guidelines Provider #843 (Substance Abuse Credit). This program will provide 4.0 contact hours (category A) continuing education credit to NC Psychologists. This program does not provide specific NBCC Credits.
