5. If, as you and other historians have explained, people prior to 1492 generally believed that the earth
was flat, then how do we explain:
• The classical story of Atlas holding up a round earth?
• Eratosthenes figuring out the earth’s circumference over 2,000 years ago?
6. Was it possible that people at one time, say during the Classical era, had such knowledge of the world,
only to forget it later?
7. Why might the flat-earth story emerge? What purpose would it serve?
8. Does it make a difference which version of the story people believe? (“Phoebe and Ross argue about
evolution”)
