UoS Learning Targets Planning Guide 2.0
Grade: Kindergarten
Subject: Math Unit 9
Step 1: Decide upon the FOCUS of the Unit of Study.
Directions: Look at the title. Skim the Overview. Survey the CCSS. Work with your team to write the focus in ONE sentence!
FOCUS Sentence: Students will add and subtract within 5 using a variety of strategies.
Step 2: Determine the essential LEARNING TARGETS, written as “I Can” statements.
Directions: Write “I Can” statements for concepts/skills that are the focus of the UOS. Choose NO MORE Than 3!
Learning Targets:
1. I can show how to add and subtract with objects.
2. I can show my thinking about adding and subtracting using pictures.
3. I can show more than 1 way to make 10.
Step 3: Create or Find a STUDENT WORK SAMPLE for each Learning Target.
Directions: Create a student task for each Learning Target that will inform you of their level of proficiency. What does proficiency
look like?
1. Teddy Bear Story Maps and observation check list. Proficient is correctly solving ALL 4 story
problems.
2. Teacher created addition and subtraction math journal prompts. Students solve addition
and subtraction problems in math journals using pictures.
3. Teacher created ladybug (addition) worksheet. Proficiency TBA.
Step 4: Review/rewrite the “ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS" and "BIG IDEAS.”
Directions: Review the Essential Questions in the UOS. Decide as a team if you want to rewrite/revise any or all of them. The Big
Ideas are the intended student responses to the Essential Questions.
Big Ideas:
1. What are some different ways that you can add two numbers?
2. What are some different ways that you can solve word and number problems?
