a. Tips for College Essay
b. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an
intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma—anything that is of
personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps
you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
4. Speaking (group reads selected books while others do speaking practice – bring stuff to take
notes for int. question)

4. End class section with tour of library. Check out books for students. Can pick any topic/any book
but must be able to complete the reading Wednesday of next week. Cannot be a magazine or
pamphlet. Suggestions could include short novels or sections of larger works.

you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.

a. Describe a person from your country’s history. Why do you think this person was
important?
b. Talk about a difficulty you have overcome in your life. Describe the experience and say
why it was difficult to overcome.

i. Students work in groups of two to complete Google Doc for question types. I’ll
convert Google Doc to Excel and post it on Sebaworld
ii. Discuss the differences that students list
c. Hand out texts, download software, take reading section practice test

your opinion and why? What are the advantages and disadvantages of watching TV in

i. 15 seconds to prepare (write brief outline on paper to guide your answer)

Pronunciation overview
a. Vowels are voiced sounds made with the mouth open. Consonants are sounds blocked
by the tongue, teeth or lips. They can be voiced or unvoiced. There is one consonant
made with the mouth open, and no blockage, but it is unvoiced: the H.
b. Common errors for Chinese speakers learning English
c. UIowa website for sound production
i. Follow along with IPA chart handout and demonstrate some English sounds
ii. Reference mouth diagram for places of articulation
Note taking strategies
a. First, how to take notes during listening sections

TOEFL Speaking section practice implementing phonetics lesson – reference infographic as
students progress through the speaking section (random group assignment, one speaker per
question, partner gives feedback and help)
a. Start with PPT to review strategies and format (take notes on the video!)
b. 2 questions about familiar topics
c. 4 questions about short conversations, lectures, and reading passages
Thursday
1. Conversation
a. Describe the plot to your favorite movie.
i. What happens? Who are the characters? What are the conflicts? How are they
solved?
2. The culture of the American (college) classroom – PPT
a. Start with asking students to make two columns and to list out some differences
between the two (in English)
i. Follow with pair and share
b. Go through PPT
3. Explain TOEFL rating system
a. Brief overview (details will be addressed with each section)
4. Explain ACTFL OPI rating system
a. Explore samples of other speakers at different proficiency levels
b. Novice/Int/Adv – 1 sample of each
5. Short break
6. Integrated writing question 1 practice and send by email (20 minutes permitted for response)
a. Do not use dictionaries or any other resource while you write your response

Wednesday

2. Practice TOEFL Writing Section type and send in email to psebastian@collegeofidaho.edu or

iii. Kinds of independent writing questions
b. Practice question 1 – Agree or Disagree (30 minutes to respond)
i. Show practice question 1 and encourage students to use the template to draft
an essay response to the question (exactly 30 minutes total to write response)
ii. Students can email responses to me or hand them in if handwritten
iii. Ask students to look at level 3, 4, and 5 response (blind copy) and rank them in
order. Have them explain their rankings (TPS). Rubrics will use independent
writing rubric as a guide.
c. Short 10 minute break

iii. Commentary is on the back of each sample response

2. Begin ACTFL OPIs
3. Once OPI is complete- will go back into vocabulary game rotation led by Ben/Regan
a. Games –academic vocab (students rotate in stations every 20 minutes)
i. Flyswatters- Regan will describe a vocabulary word and first student to point to
the word with flyswatter wins the round.
ii. Circumlocution
iii. Duolingo Practice (set up accounts and orient students to software)
