The Takapuna Rotarian had polio when he was just five. He was in Auckland Hospital for five months. Ken was chosen to be one of 30 New Zealand Rotary members to travel to India to help vaccinate children in an anti-polio campaign in January 2011. India is one of four countries worldwide where polio is considered to be endemic. The other countries are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. To be considered polio free a country has to have no reported cases for three years. Ken is grateful he had no lasting effects from polio when he visited patients in hospital in India. Seafood Poultry & Game - A Central Market Tradition: In the Adelaide City region of South Australia There is something truly inspiring about family businesses. Traditions, values, work ethics, precious memories and our rich cultural heritage. At Angelakis Bros. we are proud of our humble beginnings and our success as South Australia's largest and most respected family-operated seafood and poultry company with national and international markets. In the 1920's Michael George Angelakis farewelled his Greek island home of Symi in the Aegean, famous for its sponge divers, and opened his arms to Australia as a migrant. The fish industry has always been in our blood. In a borrowed dinghy fishing the waters in the Great Australian Bight off Thevenard, he began what grew into a leading Australian enterprise. Sons George, Nick and their brother-in-law Sam Sperou embraced the opportunity to establish Angelakis Bros. as a formal entity. Today, the third generation - Michael G Angelakis, Tom and Michael N Angelakis, Peter and Michael Sperou, possess ownership and day to day management of the business. Our history of commitment to all aspects of the seafood industry (processing, marketing, wholesale and retail) and reputation for quality, consistency and innovation has been developed for over 70 years. Today, Angelakis Bros. is a diversified family business employing the latest technology and over 140 people. Whilst seafood is the core of our business, we also have a reputation for Poultry and Game products. Angelakis Bros.' new processing facility in Adelaide is designed and operated on a single principle - 'To ensure that the products are as fresh and full of natural flavours as they can possibly be'. We constantly set out to exceed the most stern standards and quality approval under the HACCP-based Quality Assurance Program.
