What is a cell?
Do plants have DNA?
Mahalia is looking through the microscope at high power, but doesn’t see anything. Describe TWO THINGS that she could do to see better.
Lesson #8
Cell theory & organelles
Objective:
Name tenets of cell theory.
Identify 4 organelles.
Sit in your assigned seat & take out your HW (sex ed paragraph)
Write down today’s topic in your T.O.C. Change yesterday’s topic to “Sex Ed”

Cell Theory WS
We know all living things are organized into cells.
But do non-living things have cells, too?
How do cells do all the processes (MR GORE) that make them alive?
Paramecium video
You’ll answer these questions yourselves.
Don’t break the high power objective lens!
Move slides on low power; do drawings on high power
If can’t see anything, return to low power
Take out your 4 circles from last week
Do four drawings:
Onion, human cheek, cloth, plastic bag
Focus on what’s INSIDE the cells; if there are cells
Analysis Questions: Write on your paper
What does a cell look like?
What’s inside cells?
Do non-living things have cells?
But do non-living things have cells, too?
How do cells do all the processes (MR GORE) that make them alive?

Cell Theory
#1: All living things have cells
#2: Cell is the most basic unit of life.
(Nothing smaller than a cell can be alive.)
#3: All cells come from other cells
We know all living things are organized into cells.
But do non-living things have cells, too?
How do cells do all the processes (MR GORE) that make them alive?
…what’s INSIDE of them?
Nucleus
Holds DNA, controls the cell
City Hall or Brain of Cell
In…
plants & animals
The area inside the cell that everything floats in
Full of liquid
Example:
Air in a room
Found in…
Plants & animals
The outside layer of a cell that controls what moves in and out
Example:
Fence & gates to a city
Found in…
Plants & animals
Hard outside layer of cell that makes it stiff
Example:
Concrete wall outside city
Found in:
Plant only
Label the cell parts on your microscope drawings
Add up your points for today.

Exit Questions
Complete sentences
1.
What’s an organelle? (In your own words)
2.
3.
What does the cell membrane do?
Supposed you looked at human skin and a piece of aluminum foil under a microscope. Describe in 2+ sentences how the human skin would look different compared to the aluminum (reference the things we learned about in class today).
Good lesson structure; inquiry focus worked
Problem was the lab took forever and organelles was rushed. Should only do microscopes and cell theory in one lesson. Then have them save the microscope drawings and identify organelles the next day
