Colonization in Africa

The book we are about to start reading, Things Fall Apart by
Chinua Achebe, was written partially in response to the
colonization of Africa by many European nations.

What does colonization mean?

Imperialism is when one country takes over another nation
and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life

Watch the video and fill in the guided notes with the correct
responses


+
Chinua Achebe’s purpose

Why did the video say Achebe wrote TFA?

What was he trying to prove about African tribes and
culture?
+
On your own…

Read the SparkNotes summary of imperialism in Africa
silently and fill in the corresponding guided notes

Cultural imperialism

Imposing one’s values on another culture or country

What examples can you think of?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzrLknqLhvQ
+
Example 1
 Travel
almost anywhere in the world today
and, whether you suffer from habitual Big
Mac cravings or cringe at the thought of
missing the newest episode of MTV’s The
Real World, your American tastes can be
satisfied practically everywhere.
+
Example 2
The
actions of settlers when they
first arrived on this continent and
massacred or assimilated
essentially the entire “savage”
Native American population.
+
How does this relate to Things Fall
Apart?

Just like in “No Witchcraft for Sale”, there are two cultures
conflicting:

African culture

??

Which culture do you think is trying to replace the other
culture?
+
Theory of Change

We will discuss more later, but a theory of change is your
view on what needs to change in the world AND how you are
going to help cause that change

Will be working on this as a class collectively and
individually
Understanding
our Context
Deciding what
needs to be
improved
Figuring out
our role in the
change
