Day 2 Assignment
5th Grade Online Language Arts Literacy Course:
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Assessment Descriptions:
“Peachy Pairs” Synonyms and Antonyms Activity:
10 vocabulary words from Chapters 1-10; 11-20; 21-30 and 31-39 of James and
the Giant Peach will be displayed on the website. Students will be instructed to use
thesaurus.com to search synonyms and antonyms for the 10 vocabulary words.
Students will complete a graphic organizer displaying their synonyms and
antonym pairs – will print and submit to teacher in school. This will be graded 4
separate times throughout the course and will count as 10 points each time.
Character Development: Who’s Who Inside the Peach
After reading up to chapter 15 of James and the Giant Peach students will have
been introduced to the main characters and insects of the story. Students will visit a
page on the online course with images and names for the characters in the story.
They will then print and complete a graphic organizer where they will read a
description, quote or trait and match it to the character’s name.
Motion Picture Clip – “Family”
Students will view a clip from Disney’s James and the Giant Peach motion picture
and complete a journal/blog entry to answer the following questions:
“Why is the song Family important to James on his journey? After reading the
book, do you think that James has found a new family? Explain why or why not.”
Blog/Journal Responses:
1.) If you could spend time with one character from James and the Giant Peach,
who would it be and why? What would you talk to them about?
2.) Imagine that the Peach traveled to one more location…where do you think it
should go? Explain.
Final Project: Create a PowerPoint presentation to chronicle the journey of the peach
from beginning to end. A template will be provided.
Each slide must contain the following:
- An image of or relating to the location
- 2-3 sentences describing what happened to the characters at each location
Rubrics and Grading:
Peachy Pairs Synonyms and Antonyms – (10 points each grouping of
chapters)
10 words – 1 points per word. Student must include a correct synonym and
antonym for each vocabulary word given.
Who’s Who Inside the Peach? – (10 points)
Must correctly match up James, the two Aunts, Miss Spider, Centipede, The
Glowworm, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Earthworm and Silkworm.
Journal Response Rubrics – will be used for the Motion Picture Analysis
and Questions 1 and 2:
