Staying Cool In Trona
Boy-O-Boy, the weather is hot in Trona. The sun
is glaring and everyone is looking for ways to
stay cool. Trona Care Inc. would like to share
with you some tips and ways to BEAT THE HEAT
while still having fun.
1. Water, Water, Everywhere: Summer is the
perfect time for fun in the sun with water. Get
out the water sprinkler, have a water-gun fight
(Tip: with of course, our local business Water
Blasters Inc.), have a water-balloon fight, and
add a Kiddie wading pool for fun. Tip: Kiddie
wading pools are inexpensive and you can buy
one for no other reason than to put your feet in
it. Even playing a game of catch by soaking
sponge balls in a bucket of water can make you
feel like you are in Antarctica.
3. Get Crafty: Set up a lemonade stand for
friends and family to enjoy a cool cup. Tip:
Adding cranberry juice ice cubs can make your
lemonade have a special kick of flavor that will
keep everyone coming back for more.
4. Inside Out or Outside In: Enjoy places like the
Trona Branch Library or our Historical Museum
or even our Community Pool (Monday thru
Thursday 1pm to 7pm, Friday Thru Sunday 1pm
to 6pm). With stories to read, things to learn
and lots of snacks to buy, each place can make a
hot day seem like a cool glass of water.
5. When All Else Fails…It’s Popsicle Time!
Whether inside or out, at home or at work,
there’s nothing like a cold treat to cool you
down quickly. Tip: Plan ahead and let the kids
help make their own frozen treat using their
favorite juices or stock up on their favorites for
those emergency moments when everyone just
needs to chill out! Tip: Always, Always drink lots
of fluids and whatever you and your family
choose to do, have fun and stay cool.

Fun Summer Treat
As a kid or even as a teenager, one of the favorite
Summer treats is snow cones. They're bright and
colorful and refreshing. Being in a remote area
sometime you don’t have snow cone syrup when
you want to make them. Snow Cones are and will
always be the signal that Summer had finally
arrived. Of course, you can make snow cones at
home too, but the syrups are kind of pricey and it's
easy and cheap to make your own snow cone syrup.
You can do these several ways. The first is using
Kool-Aid or using fruit juices.
Snow Cone Syrup Using Kool-Aid
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid, any flavor
1.Place the sugar and water in a pan and bring to a
boil.
2. Remove from heat and stir in the Kool-Aid.
3. Cool to room temperature, then place in the
refrigerator until chilled.
4. Store the syrups in squeeze bottles
5. When you're ready for a snow cone, pour the
syrup over finely crushed or shaved iced. YUM!
For a healthier way to make snow cones syrup
simply use fruit juice instead.
Whichever way you like it, enjoy a cool treat under
the summer sun.

Heat Safety
Heat stroke is an elevated body
temperature with physical and neurological
symptoms. Heat stroke can be deadly if not
treated properly or promptly.
First step is prevention. There are two types
of heat stroke. One is sudden onset and the
second is lack of fluids in your body. Both
can be deadly. Prevention starts with making
sure you are hydrated. If you know you will
be doing an activity in the heat, start
drinking extra water as much as 24 hours in
advance. For breakfast eat salty foods and
make sure you have extra sports drinks
chalked full of electrolytes. Wear light
colored and light clothing to allow your skin
to breath and sweat. A major sign of heat
stroke is that you stop sweating.
Prevention of heat stroke is very
important. Continue to drink water and
sports drinks and eat salty snacks
throughout the day to replenish what your
body loses during the activities.
However, if you do get heat stroke you
need to be able to identify the signs and
react.
Early signs can be related to heat
exhaustion;
But you can jump directly into heat stroke:
> rapid pulse
> you stop sweating
> confusion
> disorientation
> Difficult breathing
> high body temperature
> lack of motor movement
> hallucinations
> seizures
> even comas
If you observe any of these signs start the
treatments below and call for emergency
assistance either doctor or paramedic.
Cool the body down: Sit, relax, find shade, wet
some clothes and place on skin, drink fluids
slowly alternate between sports drink and
water, use a fan if possible. If you cannot get the
body temperature down notify emergency
medical personnel. They can give more ideas on
cooling down the body while help is on the way.
Make sure to practice these techniques. Heat
stroke can be prevented.
Tips and Tricks:
> Dizziness
> nausea
> vomiting
> weakness
> fatigue
> headache
> muscle cramps
if you are have any of these symptoms, rest,
get out of the sun, rehydrate yourself.
* Prevention is key, drink extra fluids up to 24
hours in advance of your activities, eat salty
foods, drink sports dink with electrolytes.
* Continue to replenish yourself of electrolytes,
water, and salt before, during and after your fun
in the sun.
