Outreach Notice Research Technician GS-0462-8/9 Permanent Position USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station Brewton, AL R esearch Work Unit SRS-4158, Restoring and Managing Longleaf Pine Ecosystems, of the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station is recruiting a research technician. The position is located on the Escambia Experimental Forest, 7 miles south of Brewton, Escambia County, AL and 160 miles from Unit headquarters in Auburn, AL. The position is targeted for the GS-8/9 grade level, with a salary range of $ 37,631 to $54,028. This is a permanent full-time position. Application is open to all U.S. citizens. The position The mission of SRS-4158 is to provide knowledge, strategies, and tools for restoring, managing, and sustaining longleaf pine ecosystems in the southeastern United States and foster insight about ecosystem restoration globally. Unit staff work with partners and cooperators to provide knowledge and technologies needed to successfully restore and manage these ecosystems as they are increaslingly affected by a variety of human and natural influences. The Escambia Experimental Forest is one of two research forests managed by the Unit and is key to many field research projects. The incumbent will be responsible for maintenance, protection and management of the Experimental Forest, its research studies and management demonstrations, and all associated buildings, equipment, facilities and improvements. Knowledge required The incumbent for this physically demanding position will have comprehensive knowledge of practical forest management methods and techniques and silvicultural practices applicable to southern pine forest types in general and the longleaf pine type in particular. This includes knowledge of surveying and the cruising, marking and scaling of timber; laying out and supervising logging operations; conducting inventories by species and diameter-classes; determining site index and stand volumes; prescribing the type and timing of cultural treatments required for effective regeneration of a particular site; applying prescribed burns; identifying competition control needs; and prescribing the most cost-effective procedures for site management. A working knowledge GIS is expected. Location This position will be located on the Escambia Experimental Forest, near Brewton, AL, the county seat of Escambia County. The population of Brewton, in 2012, was 5,347. Schools are the Brewton Elementary School, Brewton Middle School, T.R. Miller High School, and the Jefferson Davis Community College. Mean housing prices in 2011 were $129,993 for detached homes, $90,556 for townhouses or other attached units, and $31,848 for mobile homes. The climate is hot during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 80s and cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 92.10 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 33.60 degrees Fahrenheit. The annual average precipitation at Brewton is 68.62 Inches. Rainfall in is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is March with an average rainfall of 7.60 Inches.
