Dear THE LION KING Jr. Auditioner,
Thank you for choosing to audition for THE LION KING Jr. Please read through this packet and make sure that you are ready
to make the commitment to the production. We are pleased you want to audition and we are excited to see what you can
do, but we want you to understand what is expected of you. Please do not audition unless you are truly interested and are
ready to make the commitment needed. Audition materials are located online- see the directions on the back of this sheet
for how to prepare for auditions.
Please read the following production company rules/policies and make sure you understand what will be expected of you.
This includes:
 remaining eligible throughout the production (not failing any class at any time)
 attending all scheduled rehearsals on time and with a good attitude
 helping with the technical aspects of the production whenever possible
 helping to promote the show and the theatre department at school and home
 Learn your lines responsibly in a timely manner – (Not learning lines is grounds for removal from show at any
time)
 being flexible and working with each other
It takes all this, and much more, to create a really fine piece of theatre, as we know you are capable of doing.
Rehearsals can be any weekday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. There will be a snack/break time in the Choir Room between
3:20 and 3:35. There will be at least one- probably two- Saturday rehearsals in March/April. (Most learners will not
have rehearsals on all days- however, the leads, (the 14 speaking/solo roles) should plan on rehearsals 3-4 days a
week.) There will be after school rehearsals every school day from Monday, April 20 through the opening of the
show on May 1. (Except STAAR dates) If you have ANY conflicts between March 1 and May 1, please note them on
the audition form. Performance dates for this production are May 1-4.
Please note that excessive absences (more than 2) are grounds for dismissal from the show. We cannot rehearse productively
without the cast. YOU are the show. Don’t forget that. You are also expected to be concentrating on the show and working
in character during every rehearsal. This is not a time for horseplay or goofing off. Good theatre is hard work. It is very
rewarding, but it is hard work. Make sure you are ready and willing to do that work. Because the rehearsal period for this
show is very short, special attention will be given to conflicts. Please be sure to carefully list all conflicts. Learners will be
given scripts, recordings, and music on 2/23/15. It is an expectation that they will have THEIR LINES and SONGS
MEMORIZED before the first rehearsal on March 16.
Every actor is essential in creating a good piece of theatre. A major consideration in casting the show will be your willingness
to commit to the show. If you have ever been cast in a show, but not performed your part, be sure to tell us why this will not
happen again on your audition form. If you ever did not come to a choir performance for which you were scheduled, tell us
why that will not happen on your audition form. Special consideration will be given to performers who have previously
demonstrated an ability and willingness to stick with a part and to be at all rehearsals (Drama and/or Choir) on time and
ready to work. Please READ and FOLLOW the AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS included in this packet for your best possible
chance for a speaking/solo role.
Most of the costumes for this production will be provided. You will be asked to provide appropriate undergarments and you
will be required to have black jazz shoes. You will be given much more information after the show is cast. You will be
expected to sell 10+ tickets and to pay a $50 production fee to help cover the costs of the production. Please note that we
do not want to prevent any learner from participating due to financial concerns. Please contact Ms. Hazleton or Mrs. Hartzell
for more information.
After reading all of the materials, think about your time and motivation and decide if this kind of experience is right for you.
If so, fill out this form and bring it with you to the auditions. We look forward to working with you.
Thank you for your interestFranci Hazleton, Theatre Arts Director, Coppell Middle School West [THE LION KING Jr. Artistic Director]

THE LION KING Jr. Audition Instructions and Procedure
The Lion King, Jr. auditions will be Wednesday, February 18 and Thursday, February 19 from 3:30-4:45 in
the Choir Room. [Tom Sawyer will rehearse from 5:00-5:30 on both of these days] There will be an
additional, appointment only, audition time from 7:00-7:30 am on Thursday, February 19. This is ONLY for
athletes who cannot audition after school.
All students will be auditioning for all roles. You do not have to audition for a role to be considered for it. To
get more information about the show – go to www.tinyurl.com/westlkinfo . There is information about casting
and roles as well as a show synopsis and sample audio clips. It is our expectation that all learners who
audition will be familiar with the information on this site.
SCENE WORK – All learners will read at least one scene. There will be one between Simba and Nala as
well as one between Timon, Pumba, and Simba. These will be cold readings – learners will be given the
script when they get to auditions. Learners will have an opportunity to see the scene before they are asked
to read it.
SINGING AUDITIONS – All learners will be asked to sing a part of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”. We will be
using the Karaoke song “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”(The Lion King) – album: Disney’s Karaoke Series: The
Lion King. We will use the INSTRUMENTAL version for auditions. There is also a VOCAL version for
learners to prep with. Both songs are available on ITunes – just search the above album. This is the best
way to prepare for the song, however, learners may also choose to prepare using other versions of the song.
OTHER PREP NOTES: Although this is a new work (we are one of the first in Tx to do it) – there are several
clips on YouTube that may help. Look for the “Lion King Jr Preview @JTF 15” and “JTF 15 I Just Can’t Wait
to be King” – these are using the actual materials we will be using.
WHEN YOU GET TO AUDITIONS:
 Wear loose clothing that you can move in (including rolling on the floor) and appropriate
shoes (jazz, ballet, tennis – NO SANDALS or FLIP FLOPS or BARE FEET) STUDENTS WHO
ARE INAPPROPRIATELY DRESSED WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO AUDITION.
 Remember – you are ALWAYS auditioning – from your completed audition forms to your
level of preparation to your attitude during auditions!
 You may only come to ONE AUDITION SESSION. You may not come to the second one to
“watch”. Auditions are closed to all except those participating in auditions. You must be
able to come to an entire audition session. Coming late or leaving early will hurt your
chance of being cast in a lead. We need to see your level of commitment.
 Learners who are properly prepared and dressed (including jazz shoes and a completed,
signed audition form) will have a distinct advantage over learners who come in and try
and “wing it”. We are expecting a large turnout and competition for the 14
speaking/singing roles will be fierce!
