Begin with the End in Mind
High School Registration 2015
Valerie Johnson, 8th grade Counselor
CLASS OF 2019
Begin with the End in Mind
This is the 2nd habit in Sean Covey’s book The 7
Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Mr. Covey
states two reasons why it is important to have
the end in mind:
1. The path you take now can affect you forever.
2. If you don’t decide your own future,
someone else will decide it for you.

A Day/B Day – a familiar term, some electives are offered on an A Day/B Day schedule.
AP – Advanced Placement – College level courses you can take in High School to earn college
credit.
Class Rank – A number which indicates your standing in your graduation class based on your
Grade Point Average (GPA). This number is calculated by the school and will be a part of your
college application.
Concentration - one subject area or a cross-disciplinary area, focused on student interests
and postsecondary goals. A concentration will provide an opportunity for the student to
participate in a rigorous, in-depth and linked study. The concentration may include but is not
limited to courses in CTE, Arts Education, AP, and ROTC.
Credit - In high school if you pass a class, your reward is one “credit.” To pass a class in high
school a student must achieve a passing (70 or above) final course grade, and pass the End of
Course test. Once you have been awarded a credit in a course, you may not repeat the same
course for credit, elective or otherwise.
EOC – End of Course test required to earn credit in Math I, English 9, and Biology. No EOGs in
high school!

Extracurricular – In addition to school. An activity that you would do before or after school
such as clubs, sports, musical activities or volunteer work.
Four by Four – Core classes are taught for one semester. At the end of the semester you will
have completed a full credit for each class (unless it is an A Day/B Day elective). Then you will
take four more classes second semester for a total of 8 classes a year.
GPA – Grade Point Average – the average of grades earned and the number of courses taken
PLTW – Project Lead the Way , Honors courses which carry additional quality points
Quality Points – extra GPA points for taking honors level classes.
Weighted GPA - GPA including extra points for the honors classes. An unweighted GPA
would be the average without including the quality points.
