Homophones This week’s homophone spellings are: 1. Aloud (using an audible speaking voice) 2. Allowed (to permit something) 3. Waste (failure to use something wisely, properly) 4. Waist (body part between ribs and hips) 5. See (to perceive/view something with the eyes) 6. Sea (a body of water) 7. Father (a male parent) 8. Farther (to or at a point that is more distant in space or time) 9. Profit (to make money/gain advantage) 10.Prophet (somebody who conveys the will of a deity) Word of the Week: Resilience Word of the Week Definition 1. The ability to recover quickly from setbacks. Her resilience is admirable; few people could bounce back so quickly after such a tragedy. 2. Elasticity The ability of matter to spring back quickly into shape after being bent or stretched. Resilience (noun) • • How many times can you use our word of the week? How many subjects can you use it in? Help! Help! Break up the word into syllables – Split up a complicated word into syllables and concentrate on spelling one syllable at a time. Practise writing down the word Write out the word several times, this might be enough for you to remember it. Techniques Make a reminder – Write the word on a post-it note and stick it somewhere you will look often e.g. on the fridge door! Look for words within words – You might be able to learn a long word by noticing that it contains one or more smaller words. Example: piece = piece of pie Help! Learn a spelling rule – Words may follow a spelling rule, learn it! For example: rhythm helps your two hips move Techniques Look, say, cover, write and check – repeat these steps at intervals (e.g. after 10 minutes, 1 hour, a day) until you can spell the word with confidence. Sound out silent lettersLearn words with silent letters by sounding out the silent letters and making the words sound silly. For example: gnome = g – nome Good luck!
