Step 3
Read the following text and answer the questions.
The Union Flag
The flag of Britain – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is officially
called the Union Flag, because it embodies the emblems of three countries united under one
Sovereign. Although more commonly known as the Union Jack this is in fact incorrect and
probably arises from the way in which the Royal Navy itemised flags in ships’ stores lists: the
small Union Flag worn at the jack-staff (bows) would appear as ‘Flags: Union “Jack”. The
emblems that appear on the Union Flag are:
- the red cross of St George, for England, on a white ground
- the white diagonal cross or saltire of St Andrew, for Scotland, on a blue ground
- the red diagonal cross of St Patrick, for Ireland, on white background.
The first Union flag, in 1606, combined the crosses of St George and St Andrew. It was made
up under James I, a Scottish king who came to the English throne in 1603 and united both
countries under his rule.
The flag went through several changes before it got its final version. In 1801, following the
union of Great Britain with Ireland, St Patrick’s cross was added. The cross remains in the
flag although now only Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
