Most people call me Chuck. In fact, a
lot of people don’t know I have the first

New York because my father was an
itinerant engineer and happened to be

system in New York. I was born in

Davey Tree with me. I don’t have

S.A. Wilde
“I arrived in Madison in September of 1950. At that time there
were only three places in the country with a recognized graduate
program in forest soils. One was at Yale with Harold Lutz. One
was at Duke with Ted Coile, and one was at Wisconsin with Doc
(Wilde). At that time, Stan Gessel was an Instructor at the
University of Washington and just starting his program. Bill
Pritchett was just a young agronomist running corn fertility
studies. Poor Bill had no idea where fate would take him. His first
forest soils publication appeared in 1959 (Pritchett 1959). This
paucity of places to study forest soils led several of us to the
University of Wisconsin, which I will say was all to our mutual
benefit. Doc's influence on the field at that time was in full flower
and he tended to make the most of it. With his gaggle of grad
students, Doc would annually make a grand arrival at the SSSA
meetings. In those days, forest soils was in a sub-section of
Division 5. We were 5A. Division S-7 was not approved until
August 1962.”

The forester is an amateur woodsman with a
college education. There are two classes of
foresters. One class believes that keeping
abreast of those broad dynamic movements of
the present day that challenge the best efforts of
the nation’s thinkers. The other class fights fire,
builds truck trails, plants trees and wears old
clothes.
Some foresters have offices, some live in cities
and some work in the woods. Lots of the foresters
spend practically their entire lives in God’s great
out-of-doors. They love to hunt and fish. They
would be, too, if they had the time.
It used to be said that a forester’s best friends
were his horse and his axe…..

Davey: Up until 1970 if you were a female, you
were not eligible to enroll in forestry.

Interviewer:
Really, you mean there was a rule?
Davey: Oh an absolute rule, strict rule. And 1970,
the year I became department head, we enrolled
our first four women students.

What do these two people have in common?
What do these two people have in common?
Carl Sagan
Chuck Davey
They were both born in Brooklyn, NY
Yummy. Crabs from the Bay. The thing I learned (since I had no idea
how to prepare them) was that the preparation made a huge difference
in the flavor. In downtown Baltimore, we used to try as many different
vendor's products as possible. They were all good, but some were
decidedly better than others.
