How are new university graduates coping in our current economy? Graduate Careers Australia’s annual Australian Graduate Survey results for 2013 were released in late July 2014. The following are some of the findings from the survey. 71.3% of new bachelor degree graduates who entered the full-time labour market had found a full-time position within four months of completing their course. This is down from 76.1 % in 2012. 3.4% of bachelor degree graduates were unemployed, which is 4.4% lower than graduates without post-school qualifications. The average starting salary went up from $52,000 to $52,500. This change was mainly due to an increase in the female median starting salary. The top earners straight out of university were Dentistry $80,000; Optometry $70,000; Engineering $64,000; Medicine $60,000; and Earth Sciences $60,000. 93.9% of bachelor degree graduates expressed broad satisfaction with their higher education experience. The above information was obtained from the GradStats 2013 publication at http://www.graduatecareers.com.au/research/researchreports/gradstats/ and ‘The grad stats are out – and here are the biggest earners’ from the Career FAQs newsletter at http://www.careerfaqs.com.au/news/news-and-views/. A late fee of $130 will apply after this date. The QTAC application is an online application on the QTAC website at http://www.qtac.edu.au/. You need your LUI (or IB number) and PIN (day and month of birth) to begin your application. What if I change my mind after this date? Can I change my preferences? - Yes. Year 12 applicants have until 7 January 2015 to review and change their preferences for most courses (except those with a fixed closing date, see p. 5 of the QTAC Guide) before the major offer round on 15 January 2015. You change your preferences by going back into your application through the Current Applicant login. You have three free change sessions. Four or more change sessions will incur a fee. See http://www.qtac.edu.au/Applying-CurrentYr12/Feesyr12.html for information about fees. Will I know my OP before the last date to change preferences? - Yes for courses offered in the January offer round. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will mail Year 12 results on the 19 December 2014. Students can 24 wait for these results to arrive in the mail or access their OP from their Learning Account on the Student Connect website (https://studentconnect.qsa.qld.edu.au/) on 20 December 2014. You will need your LUI and PIN to enter your Learning Account. It is advisable to check out your Learning Account well before this date. I am OP ineligible. When will I get my rank? - You can find out your OP ineligible selection rank by going into your application on the QTAC website (enter through the Current Applicant login) on 30 December 2014. You will only receive your rank through QTAC. The QCAA will not give it to you when you receive your Year 12 results. If you are not a QTAC applicant, you can phone QTAC on 1300 467 822 to find out your OP ineligible selection rank. How difficult is the QTAC application? - Year 12s use the Twelve to Tertiary application located on the Online Services page of the QTAC website. The application fee is $34 (see the ‘Fees’ section on the QTAC website at http://www.qtac.edu.au/Applying-CurrentYr12/Feesyr12.html). If this does not solve the problem, ring or email QTAC. All contact information for QTAC is on p. 1 of the QTAC Guide. You need to be patient as QTAC is very busy at this time of the year and you will be placed on a queue. Consequently, it is unwise to wait until the last minute to do your application.
