Next few weeks...
• Music through the decades: One lesson taught by students on each of the
1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s. How has the music video changed?
(eg in the 1960’s there was little narrative in music videos compared to
today...no CGI, sexual references, swearing etc)
Students h/w- research a decade and plan how to teach the rest of the class
about music videos in the decade. Use visual aids / can use hand outs.
• The emergence of MTV (looking at Michael Jackson Thriller video) Why was
MTV SO influential in shaping our expectations of music videos? (because
they were widely available, became bigger budget, were almost like mini
feature films)
• Controversial music videos- why are they so controversial? (Madonna’s
“Like a Prayer” because it had a black Jesus, The Doors “Unknown Soldier”
because of graphic Vietnam footage that the government did not want
America to see)
• Political music videos- why are they controversial, and what’s their appeal?
(Rage against the Machine “Killing in the name” because of anarchy
influence, Anti Flag “One Trillion Dollars” because of Anti-Bush message
etc)
