10/1/2012 CS 340 Project Fall 2012 What is service learning? • Service learning has been defined as a “credit‐bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” • http://cesr.ua.edu/ 1 10/1/2012 http://rightclicks.cs.ua.edu Our service: Video projects • Our groups will create videos aimed at target audience – Possibilities: middle school, high school, or college students; parents of students a particular age; or the public. – Minimum length: 6 – 9 minutes • The idea is to get them thinking and learning about legal and ethical issues related to their use of computers and other technology. • We’ll incorporate our work into the CS 340 website Right Clicks 2 10/1/2012 Alternative project • In-class presentation on a topic – Ten minutes • Traditional, formal presentation using – Handouts – Visual elements like powerpoint – Each person in the group speaks for an equal time • No reading from your script Suggested Topics: • • • • • • • • Cyberbullying Plagiarism.
