GENERAL INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN VISITORS
Airport transportation
The Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge is approximately 3 hours’ drive from OR Tambo International
Airport. There are various shuttle and bus services operating between the airport and the
Pilanesberg Game Reserve, but UNISA will provide shuttles for conference delegates who will
arrive on Sunday, 12 May 2013. These will depart from the airport. Shuttles will also be
available on Thursday (16 May) morning to take delegates to the airport. More information in
this regard will be provided closer to the date of the conference.
Passports, visas, vaccinations and insurance
A valid passport and official visa are required. Please ensure that departure tax is included in
your airfare, and check duty free allowances with your travel agent. Delegates are responsible
for their own insurance cover for medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property, etc.
Vaccination is not required, but if you plan to travel to game parks (other than the Pilanesberg
Game Reserve) or to Zimbabwe or Botswana, medication for malaria should be taken. Please
check with your travel agent and/or physician.
Climate and clothing
May in South Africa is usually mild, but early mornings and evenings can be quite cool.
Lightweight clothing will be appropriate, with a jacket for evening wear. South Africans dress
informally, but for special conference events a jacket and tie are recommended.
Time
South Africa is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2).
Currency and banking
Legal tender in South Africa is the South African rand. Major European and US$ travellers
cheques will be cashed by banks and most hotels, but are not generally accepted in shops. Banks
are open 09:00 – 15:30 Monday to Friday and 09:00 – 11:00 on Saturday. Most shops are open
every day from 09:00-18:00 and later.
Tipping
It is customary to tip hotel porters, and a gratuity of 10 – 15% for good service is usual in
restaurants.
Electricity
Electric current in South Africa is 220 volt, 50Hz. Electrical sockets accept a plug with three
round pins.
