Students will assess their interests, skills, and characteristics and investigate current economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores postsecondary learning and career options, prepares students for managing work and life transitions, and helps students focus on their goals through the development of a career plan. You should be prepared to come to each class with the following items: 1. A notebook or binder for classroom activities 2. Pen/Pencil 3. There you will find course information, assignments, weekly online quizzes, How Will You Know How You’re Doing? You will know how well you are learning by your successful completion of the following course components. In addition to written feedback provided to you on your worksheets and assignments, approximately every two weeks, your teacher will sit down one-on-one to discuss your progress. It is important that you have access to our homework monitoring website, SPTS as grades will be posted on there. If you would like to know how you are doing sooner, I will try my best to give you some feedback sooner. Assessment: The assessment of student work (homework, quizzes, etc.) is designed to provide feedback for preparation of evaluative tasks which contribute to the final marks. Produce a poster of success, describing what success is and examples of success. 2. Written assessment of the challenges facing students entering the employment market. 3. Unit test Unit 2 - Now Me! 1. Written report identifying internal and external influences upon grade 10 students and possible future career impacts. 2. Produce a guide / flyer to describe and explain the importance of one particular life skill. 3. Unit test Unit 3 - What About the Future? 1. Produce a detailed resume and cover letter stating current career plans. 2. Prepare a selection of responses to questions for a mock interview The other 30% Independent Study Unit: The final task is worth 15% of the student’s final mark in the course. It will consist of an Independent Study Unit (ISU) – to produce a detailed guide to a career that interests the student personally. An oral presentation, written report and fact sheet are to be produced. More details will be provided towards the end of the semester. Final Examination The final examination for this course is worth 15% of the student’s final mark in the course. It will consist of several multiple choice/short answer questions applying the concepts they’ve learned throughout the course. More details will be provided towards the end of the semester. To be able to research potential careers using a variety of sources for use in their portfolios. 2. To locate numerous educational, volunteer and work options for their future. 3. To show an understanding of particular work fields, occupations and workplace issues. 4. To discuss current trends in society and describe how they affect the workforce. Preparation for Transitions and Change 1. To show an understanding of how to find and create work. 2. To show how to “sell” themselves to future employers by creating personal documents such as a résumé. 3. To be able to plan, set goals and make decisions about their future in order to create a career plan. 4. To look at potential changes in their personal lives and in society, and come up with strategies to deal with them. Other stuff I have tried to give you as much information as possible in this course outline. However, I expect there will be many things that pop up that I could not foresee. As such, I will probably clarify points about the assignments as they come up. As a class, I teach the course material once. If you miss it, you should do your best to work independently at home and schedule time after class (either at lunch or after school) to go over the lesson. Students who are on Individualized Education Plans (IEP), and require access to learning tools provided, you must see me well before the due date of an assignment or test. If you are unable 4 to complete an assignment on time because of something (valid) that pops up unexpectedly; please contact me ASAP should an emergency arise. Work Late Policy 1. Overdue work is contracted with a reasonable final deadline set. 2. A copy of this contract is given to the student and emailed to your parents. 3. Failure to meet the final deadline results in a zero. 5
