Rowe School of Business RSB RESEARCH GRANT – APPLICATION AND GUIDELINES (COLLABORATIVE GRANT) The EXTENDED deadline for RSB grant applications is July 15th The purpose of the RSB Research Grant is to support activities that develop, increase and strengthen research excellence in the Rowe School of Business at Dalhousie University. It is primarily intended as seed money to support applications for larger external research grants, and to increase the output of high quality peer-reviewed publications within the RSB. While preference will be given to projects that lead directly to proposals to Tri-Council agencies (e.g., SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR), it does not preclude proposals to assist with obtaining other external sources of funding. Individual awards are in the amount of $5,000 and Collaborative Research Projects are $10,000; these will be granted each year that the funding is available. 1. ELIGIBILITY Faculty members holding a full-time appointment in the RSB, and whose term of full-time appointment extends throughout the period of the grant are eligible to apply for Rowe funding. Only scholarly research will be supported. Professional consulting projects or pedagogical related-work is not eligible. Research grants are normally awarded for a two year period. Grantees may request a one year extension period. A written request must be submitted to the review committee before the funding expiry date of their RSB. The request must explain the need for an extension and provide a date when the research activities will be completed. If the extension is not approved, the grantee has three months to pay all commitments made prior to the end of the grant period. If a grant holder leaves the employment of Dalhousie University during the term of the grant, the unused portion of the fund reverts to the Rowe research account. Faculty members are limited to one individual RSB grant per project and two RSB grants (either two individual or one individual and one collaborative grant) in any three year period. Applicants who do not currently hold a RSB research grant and whose proposals meet the eligibility requirements will be given priority over existing grant holders. Individual Awards: Expenses up to $5,000 are allowable and include such costs as research assistants, equipment, research travel, or other relevant expenses incurred during the course of conducting research. Applications are ranked by the RSB Research Grant Review Committee in the following manner: i. First priority is given to new smaller stand-alone projects that may not be eligible for large external grants (e.g., SSHRC) in recognition that high quality research projects leading to journal publications can be conducted with limited funding. ii. Next priority is given to RSB applications arising from research projects that received a 4A rating in the most recent SSHRC competition for the IDG and IG programs. iii. New projects which will lead to an application for external granting agencies will be given the next preference. Proposals leading to applications to other external granting agencies will also be considered provided the applicant provides justification of their choice of external agency. iv. All full-time faculty members (pre-tenure, tenured, and Limited Term) in the RSB will be given equal opportunity to obtain funding. However, an applicant’s current access to research funding will be considered in the funding decision. v. While travel costs for conference presentations or research meetings are permitted, this fund not intended to be used solely for the purposes of travel. Applications in which travel expenses are the primary budget expense will be ranked lower than proposals in which the funds are used for other research expenses (e.g., research assistants, equipment, etc.). Collaboration Award: Research awards of $10,000 will be awarded to a proposal submitted jointly by at least three collaborators from the RSB. RSB members who hold this award are still eligible to hold individual research awards up to a maximum of two over a three year period. As with the individual awards, the same ranking priorities will apply. If no collaborative applications are awarded in any given year, two additional individual grant of $5,000 may be awarded. To increase research collaboration in the Faculty of Management, RSB researchers may apply for the collaborative grant with another researcher from any of the other Schools in the FoM (SIM, SPA, SRES) or any member of the Centres of Excellence in the FoM or any other School or Centre in the Dalhousie Campus. For such collaborative proposals, the RSB researcher must be 30 June 2015 Application for RSB Research Grant Page 1 of 6 the Principal Investigator (PI). All other eligibility requirements remain the same. In the case that there are two or more proposals for collaborative grant proposals, priority will be given to an all RSB team before consideration of other cross-FoM or cross-campus teams. 2. APPLICATION PROCEDURES A. The application deadline for the RSB Research Grants competition is 5:00 p.m. on July 15th. If the deadline falls on a holiday or weekend, it is extended to 5:00pm on the next working day. Late applications will not be accepted. B. Applicants must submit their application by email to Susan Haydt. Handwritten applications will not be accepted. C. If certification has not been obtained at the time of application, the applicant has a period of 6 months upon receipt of the Notice of Award to obtain the required approval, after which time the grant is retracted without notice. The SSHRC “Ethics Guidelines—Research with Human Subjects” defines the term “human subject” as follows: “The term ‘subject’ signifies any person who is a source of raw or unformulated data and who is not acting as, or assisting, the principal investigator.” E. The applicants will be notified in writing of the results of the competition. An account will be opened with Financial Services in the name of the successful applicants. F. POLICIES ON RESEARCH FUND ALLOCATIONS RSB Research Grants applications must be submitted before expenses are incurred. Applicants should note that receipts are required for all expenses before any money is disbursed to the grantee. There are no limits to the sums that may be requested in each of the budget categories, however, applicants are reminded that requests for all sums must be fully justified. The following guidelines have been established by the RSB Research Grants Review Committee and must be adhered to in formulating budgets for RSB Research grants. A. Research Assistants ($20 per hour maximum) Financial assistance may be provided to faculty members to employ student research assistants to perform typical RA duties (e.g., literature search). Funds may be approved for the hiring of non-student assistants, e.g. situations in which independent observers are needed to eliminate possible sources of bias in the study design or the services of transcribers for research materials collected orally. B. Honoraria The Review Committee will consider applications for the allocation of research funds for the payment of honoraria to persons whose participation is essential to a research project. Such persons might include, for example, group facilitators or research subjects. Applicants must provide a clear justification for the sums requested. Co-investigators may not be paid honoraria from RSB funds. C. Equipment/Software 30 June 2015 Application for RSB Research Grant Page 2 of 6 Assistance may be provided for the purchase of equipment or software essential to the project. D.
