Day 1: Villa Violet, Windhoek

Windhoek

Windhoek is Namibia’s capital, home to an international airport and a plethora of restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and accommodation options. The city is clean, safe and well-organised, with a colonial legacy that is reflected in its many German eateries and shops, and the widespread use of the German language. Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look, including the Alte

Feste (Old Fort), the 1896 Christuskirche (Christ Church), and the more contemporary Supreme Court.

Overnight: Villa Violet

With just six rooms, you’ll be lucky to get a booking at Villa Violet - one of the top rated B&B guesthouses in

Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.

If you are lucky enough to get a booking, you'll see why this small guesthouse is so popular: Ben and Heidi, with years of hospitality industry experience between them and speaking English, German, French and Flemish/Afrikaans, are the consummate hosts. With contagious enthusiasm, they have made Villa Violet into the very definition of a bed and breakfast guesthouse where you get a personal welcome from the owners, friendly and intimate service and exceptional value for money.

Villa Violet is a smart and attractive guesthouse tucked away in a quiet neighborhood of northern Windhoek and is a great place to start or end your safari or self-drive holiday in Namibia. You will easily find Villa Violet coming from the airport; it is close to the central areas of Windhoek; and you are within stumbling distance from the legendary eisbein and stein of Joe's Beerhouse.

The rooms at Villa Violet open onto small patios making an ideal spot to relax and read a book or have a cup of tea while you chat with Ben and Heidi. Rinse your travel-weary bones in the swimming pool or retreat to your air conditioned room with a book from the small library.

The décor as simple, elegant and modern with hotel-like amenities including wireless internet, flat-screen cable TV, climate control, tea/coffee, personal safe, honesty bar and hair dryers.

If you are looking for a warm welcome, genuine hospitality, convenience and comfort, we cannot recommend Villa

Violet highly enough: we have yet to have an unhappy customer and, so long as Ben and Heidi are at the helm, we doubt we ever will.

Day 2: Sesriem Camp Site, Namib

Namib

The Namib is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline, the

Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand from Luderitz to Swakopmund. For a big sandy desert the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous part.

Because of how old it is the Namib is home to numerous species that don’t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert an amazing array of flora and fauna manages to survive here. Famous species include the

Welwitschia – a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa’s largest antelope the Gemsbok. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place" and vast it certainly is.

Day Notes

Today's journey takes you north along one of the most scenic routes in the country - remember to allow extra time to stop for photos! Once at Sesriem you are at the gateway to perhaps the most popular destination in Namibia - the magnificent dunes of Sossuvlei and Dead Vlei, in this vast region you can wander amongstendless sand dunes, view the distantmountains, and watch game such as oryx, ostrich and springbok in amongst the dry riverbeds and gravel plains seeking shade from the searing sun. Two nights are spent in the region to give you the chance to explore and appreciate the stillness of the desert.

Day 4: Alte Brücke Resort, Swakopmund

Swakopmund

Founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more

German than Germany. Now a seaside resort, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, colonial-era buildings and the cool sea breeze make it very popular.

Day Notes

The coastal town of Swakopmund beckons! Take part in optional activities such as scenic flights, a day trip to

Sandwich Harbour, kayaking, catamaran/marine cruise or for the more adventurous sky dive, sand board or quad bike. The list of optional activities is lengthy and most will give you the chance to witness the Skeleton Coast and learn about the relationship of this harsh coastline and the mighty pounding of the Atlantic Ocean onto the shores.

Swakopmund is a quaint town full of character for those just wishing to relax.

Etosha National Park

The Etosha National Park is Namibia's premiere game viewing experience, situated in the northwest of Namibia and is an area well known for its wildlife. Vegetation ranges from dense bush to open plains attracting a diversity of wildlife. In the heart of the Park is The Etosha Pan - a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000sq kilometres.

Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill up with water after good rains to a depth which is seldom deeper than 1m. In the dry season wildlife is attracted to perennial springs and waterholes that makes for excellent game viewing.

Within the park are three large public rest camps catering for the more budget orientated traveller. There are several smaller establishments on the outskirts of the park on private land offering a more intimate and comprehensive experience. All of these establishments offer excellent value for money.
