Step 1: In Huck Finn, read Chapters 1 and 2 from page 5 to 13 carefully. Use the footnotes at the
bottom of the page and the endnotes at the end of the book (page 265) to help with comprehension.
Remember to try reading difficult dialect aloud, and quickly even, to help understand the words.
Step 2: Answer the questions below on lined paper as directed. At least 4 sentences per question.
1.) What does Huck mean when he says that the Widow is trying to “sivilize” him? Why does he
object to this?
2.) The n-word is used very casually by Huck the first time it is used. Take a look at the endnote
on page 265. Why might have Twain used it in this casual way? What is he trying to say?
3.) What sense do you get about Jim’s character from Chapter 2? What’s he like? How is he
portrayed?
Step 3: Respond to the reading strategies outlined below. These reading strategies help you
comprehend the text on a deeper level as you focus in on the richness of the language and as you
develop your own interpretations of meaning and message.
