Drama paper
It’s really two papers, one on Oedipus and one on Macbeth, each between 3-4 doublespaced pages.
Due exactly on Nov. 13th, in class. Late papers downgraded.
OEDIPUS THE KING:
Answer EITHER 1 or 2; about three-4 pages, with quotes from our text. Use page
numbers to locate the quotes.
1. Let’s not talk about it could be an alternate title to Oedipus the King. How is denial
the engine of the play?
2. In what sense is the play one long act of recognition? Before you try to answer this
one, go through the play and mark the series of revelations that lead to Oedipus’s
final understanding.
ALSO,
MACBETH:
Answer the following question, 3-4 pages, with quotes identified by act, scene, and
lines.
1. Macbeth and his wife choose bloody treason. Explain how they hope to live with
the knowledge of such crimes (and say how “successful” their strategy is). Consider,
thus, the whole play, right up to Macbeth’s last moment on stage.
Tip: Be sure to make effective use of the texts, which means for the most part
quoting them sensibly and aptly. As you know by now, when you make a claim about
a character or a setting or a theme, I want supporting evidence from the text.
All Macbeth quotes should be given with act, scene, lines: Act two, scene three, lines
8-15. You can shorten this to 2.3. 8-15.
