A new T4L project is starting in 2009
100 000 units over 4 years (same as 2005-8)
20 000 additional units for K-6 schools
– As a trade-off because 7-12 benefit from DER
• Actual unit allocations for each school are yet

• No decision has been made regarding which semester of
2009 that Sydney Region schools will be supplied
• Hunter Region was originally supplied with Optima PC’s on
T4L rollout.
– As Optima has closed, Hunter region is a Priority for
Semester 1.
• However once allocations have been sent out to schools
there will be a short turn around time required.
• Warranties will be extended on all 2005 Rollout desktops,
notebooks and servers, until the 2009 Rollout has occurred.

T4L Software Delivery
• A final announcement on this has not
yet been made but it is likely that:
– DET SOE will be delivered via the CPC’s and
Altiris
– Devices will receive base OS image followed
by specific drivers and appropriate application
layers.
– This approach will be used to rebuild older
PCs as well.

Advantages of SOE Layering
• Images are much smaller and therefore
much quicker to deploy
• Target software as required:
– K-6 software on K-6 computers
– 7-12 software on 7-12 computers
– Staff software on staff computers
• It is expected schools will be able to
initiate reimaging via the CPC themselves

• Announcement on Friday 13 March:
– “The Interactive Classrooms Project has now
been approved to commence Phase 3 of
Interactive Classrooms site installations. There
are 400 sites to be installed in Phase 3 and we
will commence installations starting the week of
23rd March 2009, with completion of the Phase
planned by the end of June 2009. We are now
working on the Phase 3 schedule and will
provide it to you in the next few days.”

Preparing for your school’s I.C.
• If your school has not yet been scheduled,
you can at least identify suitable rooms:
– Front wall must be unobstructed (flat) solid wall
space of minimum 3.6m wide by 2.8m high
– Room to cater for at least 30 students
– Power and data outlets must be on the front wall.
Power outlet must be on back wall
– Room must be accessible by all (i.e. not a
particular teacher’s classroom). Consider
disabled access as well

– Room should be secure (decent locks door/ windows)
– Consider existing ambient noise levels
• Location of room (eg. beside COLA?)
• Carpet on floor?
– Library/Computer labs may not be suitable due to loss
of access when a VC needs to be run
– Long rooms can be a problem for the rear
camera/microphones
– If you need to build a wall, ask a TA for advice ASAP
– When selecting your Connected Classroom, consider
future – not current – requirements

• During Term 1, 2009 Sydney Region has been
running a Statewide Stage 3 Jeopardy Tournament
via Video Conference and Bridgit
• A total of 32 schools participated in eight Heats with
the top two schools from each Heat to go onto the
Finals Series in Week 10

• We connected a 19-student school at Boree
Creek to two schools in Sydney and one in
Newcastle. The Far North Coast was linked to
the Southern Highlands and New England.
• 32 schools from eight Regions participated

• 16 of the 32 schools progressed from the Heats
to the Preliminary Finals in Week 10

Finals
• 4 schools will compete in the Grand Final on
Friday April 3rd.

Common site variations encountered in the installation process are
now included in the standard price. This will reduce the impact at
the time of installation in both time and cost. (this is still to be

• On-site Installation is included with networkable
printers and photocopiers
• It is important that when the installer arrives they are
provided with appropriate network details:
– An available STATIC IP Address, the Subnet Mask, Gateway and
DNS settings for your school. The installers WILL NOT create a Print
Queue on your school fileserver
– An available network outlet and Patch Lead will be required
– If your copier provides “Scan to File” facilities, you’ll need server name,
username, password and sharename for an appropriate folder.

Email, Spam and Phishing
• Many school staff are complaining about Spam and
Phishing emails arriving in their mailbox
– Spam & Phishing are a fact of life and we must be aware
– The vast majority of email arriving at NSW DET’s mail server is NOT
legitimate email
– We only see a trickle of Spam that the filters miss
• If you receive Spam, you can forward it to “abuse” or just
delete it.
• Teach your staff that no-one will legitimately email them
asking for personal details – this is Phishing.

• The “Account Management” option under My
Applications in the DET Staff Portal is now removed
– Password management for Student Accounts is now
handled by EMU in My Applications

must be granted by the Principal or delegate using AMU

Your School Server(s)
• Most schools would find it very difficult to
operate if their server ceased functioning
• SRITSU recommends that School Servers
are in warranty
– As they run out, plan to buy a new one
• If you received your server:
– Before 2005 – Not covered by warranty
– in 2005 - Warranty will expire this year
– After 2005 – 4 Year warranty still covers

School Servers
• Servers need on-site warranty to ensure prompt
repair if hardware issues occur
• Servers out of warranty may lead to expensive
repair bills which may not be cost-effective
• All Discretionary Purchase and T4L servers are
supplied with priority 4-hour response time for
hardware failure for four years
• Replaced servers may still be useful for noncritical functions such as AD and data backup

Preparing for a New School Server
• Many schools ordered a server in 2005 when T4L started
and their server is now 4 years old
• During 2009, these schools should either order a new
T4L server, or buy one with school funds
• Since then, servers have changed from 32-bit to 64-bit
processors meaning that some changes are necessary
when updating. These include:
– New Logon scripts, Changes to Fileshares
– Changes to Print Queues and Group Policies
• SRITSU can assist with your changeover
– Expect two to three days of downtime during changeover

• In a Nutshell (just to recap):
– Over 4 years, a personal laptop will be supplied to every
year 9 to 12 student
• In 2009, all Year 9 students. In 2010, all year 9 students… etc.
– All permanent high school teachers to receive the same
laptop this year
– Managed Wireless infrastructure to be installed in every
high school in NSW in two stages:
• 1. Library and a set of classrooms in close proximity
• 2. The rest of the school
– Teaching and Learning Resources to be provided

Digital Education Revolution
• Following agreement by the Federal Government to
offer an additional $200 million for NSW DET to
cover identified under-funding, NSW DET:
– Released a Tender for “Compact Learning Devices”
– Released a Tender for Wireless Infrastructure for Schools
• 21 Vendors responded to the Laptops Tender
– 6 were shortlisted: Acer / ASI / ASUS / DELL / HP / Lenovo
– Closed 6 March. Evaluations are happening right now
• 16 Vendors responded to the Wireless Tender
– 4 were shortlisted: ASI / IBM / Lenovo / NEC
– Closes 27 March

– “Laptops 4 Learning” (L4L)

SR ICT Information Days
Sydney Region is the only region in
NSW DET to offer four ICT Information
Days every term.
These days have been running across
the entire region since Term 2, 2004
and in the St George and Sutherland
Districts since 1999.
The days represent reliable, effective
communications and updates for
schools covering all aspects of ICT
in School Education.
Open to all interested school staff.
