Blood pressure measurement
(Sphygmomanometry).
Measurement of brachial arterial
blood pressure using a standard
cuff sphygmomanometer with a
stethoscope.
EMG/ECG recording. Involves
electrical recordings from active
skeletal muscle or myocardium and
involves placement of electrodes on
appropriate sites on the skin
surface, for EMG or ECG recording.
Isometric strength testing.
Subjects perform maximal isometric
(i.e. fixed length) contraction of
muscle, usually the knee extensors
or knee flexors of one leg. Each
contraction would last 3-5 seconds,
with a minimum of one minute's
recovery between contractions.
Electrical stimulation of muscle.
This involves percutaneous
electrical stimulation of human
muscle, the principal muscles being
the quadriceps and gastrocnemius.
Submaximal exercise on a cycle
ergometer. This involves subjects
cycling on a cycle ergometer
(Monarch) ergometer at workloads
less than 90% their VO2 max.
Submaximal exercise on a
treadmill. This involves subjects
walking or running on a motor
driven treadmill ergometer at
workloads less than 90% their VO2
max.
Submaximal exercise on a rowing
ergometer. This involves subjects
rowing on a rowing ergometer

Muscle testing on an isokinetic
dynamometer. This involved
testing contractile properties on the
Con-trex isokinetic system. The
volunteer is secured on the con-trex
by a seat belt system, which
prevents lateral movement. An
abort switch is provided for the
volunteer.
Expired gas analysis. Collection of
expired gasses by means of
mouthpiece or facemask. O2 and
CO2to be analysed to calculate the
volunteer's metabolic rate.
3D Motion Analysis (Normal
Activity). Healthy adult subjects will
be video-taped doing everyday
activities, for example walking,
sitting to standing, bending to lift
light objects, etc. Lightweight
removable retro-reflective markers
will be placed on the subjects joint
centres and other major anatomical
landmarks.
3D Motion Analysis (Vigorous
Activity). Healthy adult subjects will
be video-taped while performing
vigorous activity or sporting
activities such as running, jumping,
kicking, throwing, lifting, etc.
Lightweight removable retroreflective markers will be placed on
the subjects joint centres and other
major anatomical landmarks.
Balance assessment using force
plates. The subject is required to
balance on one leg. The test will be
performed for a period of 30-60
seconds under two conditions eyes
open and eyes closed. The force
plate data will be used to calculate a
variety on indices of balance, such
as centre of pressure, etc.
Force plate Analysis (Normal
gait). Healthy adult subjects will be
assessed (ground reaction force
data) during normal walking and
running over one or two AMTI force
plates.

Force plate Analysis (Vigorous
activity). Healthy adult subjects will
be assessed (ground reaction force
data) one or two AMTI force plates
during vigorous activity, for
example, running, jumping, kicking,
throwing, lifting, etc.
Qualitative analysis of
fundamental motor skills. Includes
overarm throw, hopping, static
balance, dynamic balance, reaction
time. See procedure sheet for full
details.

using a friction braked cycle
ergometer (Wingate). Friction
loads randomly assigned and
ranging from 2 to 12% bodyweight
are loaded onto the bike in 6
stages.
Affect of temperature on muscle
power. Involves submersing
subject's legs (to waist) in a water
bath at 6° for 4 minutes, or 30° for
approximately 30 minutes. Power of
muscle is tested on a friction loaded
cycle ergometer using the Wingate
protocol.
