This week we will begin Module 5: Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations. We will complete lessons 1-8 this week.
We will learn how to decompose fractions as a sum of unit fractions, create tape diagrams to represent the sum of unit
fractions, and find equivalent fractions. The students will have a quiz on Friday on lessons 1, 2, 3, and 5.
**We will be focusing on CCSS: 4.NF.1, 4.NF.3b, and 4.NF.4a.
Social Studies:
We will complete our discovery of the early explorers and colonies of the United States. We will learn about the Northwest
Passage. The students will have a quiz on Wednesday where they will have to identify the explorers and colonies that we
have discussed in class and their main purpose for their exploration and settlement. A review sheet has been given to the
students that they should use in order to prepare. They are to use their graphic organizer to review as well. The students will
have a test on Thursday. The students were also given the Midwest states flashcards before the holiday. They will have a
quiz on Friday where they will have to identify the Midwest states on a map.
The link below is a great website to practice learning the states. They should click play on the states beginner level.

Stack the states is an ipad app that is also good for practicing the states.
Reading
This week we will continue our read aloud of Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. While reading, students will continue
learning how to determine the point of view as first or third person, as well as identify the story elements (character, setting,
problem/conflict, and resolution). Students will also continue with their book clubs this week. Students will take a formative
assessment on Friday. Their final summative assessment will be next Tuesday.
English
Students will work on completing their research reports in class. This report will count as a summative grade. Students will
also present their reports to the class for a formative grade. In addition, students will also take a grammar test including the
following skills: writing with correct CUPS (capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling), using prepositions correctly,
compound sentences, introductory phrases, and commas in a series. Students have received a study sheet to help prepare for
this test. The grammar test is scheduled for next Wednesday and will be your child’s final test grade in writing.
