Listen to find out about what it was like to grow up in the mountains. Discussion • What is something in the environment that changes over time? • Turn to your partner and discuss any mountains you may have seen. Ask: Were they covered in snow? What are some activities you can do in the mountains? Can you & your partner add other information? Comprehension Text Structure: • Text Structure is the way an author organizes nonfiction text. • Cause and effect is on kind of text structure. • A cause is an action or event that makes something else happen. An effect is what happens as a result. • Clue words can help readers identify the organization of the text. Some clue words are: because, if, then, so that, when, and as a result. Read the paragraph on page 313. We will read this paragraph chorally The graphic organizer shows the cause-and-effect relationship in the last sentence. The word As a result, is a clue that this is a cause-and-effect relationship. Practice With a Partner -Reread the paragraph on page 313 with your partner. -Discuss other cause-and-effect relationships. Look at sentence 2: When the glaciers began to melt, they moved slowly across the land. Cause The glaciers began to melt. Effect The glaciers moved slowly across the land. Use Graphic Organizers • Use sequence charts to organize the order of events in a selection. • Use a cause-and-effect diagram to keep track of causes and effects in texts. • Use a Venn diagram to show how things are alike and different. • Use a web to list details related to a main idea or important concept. An eruption happens when something bursts through a surface. What might you see and hear during the eruption of a volcano? The depths of something are its deepest parts. What might an explorer find in the depths of the ocean? Something that happens gradually happens very slowly over time. Which of these events happens gradually – a pond warming up in the sun, or a bolt of lightning striking a tree? When something is revealed, it was hidden but can now be seen. How could a puppy hiding under a blanket be revealed? To contract means to get smaller by shrinking. What might cause a snail to contract into its shell? If something is constant, it happens without stopping. What is an example of a constant sound? An immediate event is one that happens right away.
