Overland Tales Page 2 ACADEMIC TEAM & EXPLORATORY NEWS TEAM 6A Social Studies – Extreme Weather & Amazon Rainforest Science – Weather/Atmosphere Language Arts – Drama Unit & Webquest Online Math – Chapter 7 (Fractions & Decimals) 6th graders will be going to The Denver Zoo on April 22nd. The cost for all participants (students and chaperones alike) is $10 and a sack lunch is required. The money and permission slips will be due on April 15th so be on the lookout for further information. TEAM 6B We are excited to be finishing up a successful year with 6th grade. We have some exciting activities planned for the next 2 months. One final reminder before we take our long awaited outdoor ed trip. Although it is in April, the weather can still be extreme in the mountains with snow on the ground. We also have another field trip planned. This one will be to The Denver Zoo on April 22nd. The cost for all participants (students and chaperones alike) is $10 and a sack lunch is required. The money and permission slips will be due on April 12th so be on the lookout for further information. With the end of school approaching, we hope students continue to be diligent with their work, behavior and effort for a fantastic end of their 6th grade career. TEAM 7B Mrs. Bradfield - Social Studies Prior to leaving for spring break, we will begin our unit on Ancient Greece. I say this about most of the units that we cover, but this is one of my favorites. We will start out by studying the geography of Greece and then moving on to interesting battles of the Persian Wars. After the Persian Wars we will look at the Olympian Gods and Goddesses and take a look at some short myths which will then lead to the students writing their own in the end. In concluding the unit, we will take a look at the history of the Olympics and do our own Olympic relays as a class. Stay tuned for next month when we begin our unit on Ancient Rome! Mrs. Pair - Math Algebra – We are learning to solve equations with fractions. Students get a lot of practice with the basic operations of fractions. We are also learning how to figure simple and compound interest. Students learn real world applications for their math skills and enjoy finding the best deal for investing and borrowing. Advanced Algebra – Students have learned to factor quadratic equations using the generic rectangle and diamond method. This makes factoring much easier than the trial and error method. Students look at this process like solving a puzzle. Overland Tales Page 3 They must fill in missing parts that make a statement true. After spring break, students will learn to gather information from a graphed quadratic equation which will relate their graphs to a real situation. Mr. Parsons – Language Arts Before we leave for Spring Break we’ll be wrapping up Unit 4 in The Reader’s Journey. Specifically we’re studying poetry this last week and seeing how different sound devices can be used in various forms of poetry. Students will even get to create their own poems in any form they like! I’m excited to read the results! After spring break we’ll jump back to Unit 2 to learn more about novels. We’re continuing to journal on a weekly basis and using Literature Circles to learn how to have intelligent discussions about their Anchor books. I think the Anchor books for this unit are the best choices the students have had all year so it’s a great way to finish! We’ll also be writing a more formal paper this quarter in addition to the journaling they’re doing. Mrs. K - Science Spring is in the air! This is a great time to study biology! After spring break, we will study our final disciple in 7th grade science: life science. Our focus will include ecosystems, energy transfer through trophic levels, animal and plant adaptations, and classification. Knowing that I have been both a research zoologist and a manager of a wildlife hospital before I became a teacher, I bet you aren’t surprised that this is my favorite part of the year to teach! I’m looking forward to sharing my passion with our students. We are working on a potential field trip for May 5th. This trip will provide “field experience” to the life science we are studying in the classroom. Stay tuned for more information. The SCIENCE EXPO is April 22nd. Students have had several days in class to work on the project and the rest is now homework. They’ve started some amazing projects and it’s exciting to see what they can do! GOT SUPPLIES? Please be sure that your student has all of the supplies needed for science in this final quarter: notebook paper, science binder, highlighter, pencil bag, and two pencils. Now is a good time to re-stock your supplies! 7th Grade AVID Socratic seminars and tutorials are going very well. This month’s additional unit will be about time management. Expect to see your son or daughter keeping logs of how they spend their time. To help your AVID student, ask them how they manage their time— perhaps they can help you with yours! Overland Tales Page 4 TEAM 8A Language Arts - In language arts, we are starting our unit on Drama. This is Unit Five in our Reader’s Journey. During this unit, we will be reading plays, learning vocabulary associated with drama, and learning what it takes to stage a play. By the end of the quarter, students will be working with their lit circle groups to act out parts of their anchor book plays. Please check my webpage often for more details. Marty Spritzer mspritzer@sd27j.org (303)655-4020 Science - We are finishing our study of Genetics. For the upcoming weeks, we will be focusing on our Science Expo projects. Students can choose to do an experiment, a research project, or an invention. Students have written our timeline down in their planners and much of their work will be completed as homework. In addition to this project, we will be studying Electricity and Magnetism. We have already begun with a basic introduction to different forms of energy and now we will focus on electrical energy, studying basic concepts of electricity and basic circuits. Gus Ruybal aruybal@sd37j.org (303)655-4037 Math - In the Algebra class we have just finished Chapter 8, which dealt with quadratic equations. At this point, students should be comfortable with factoring, solving quadratic equations, and graphing them. They have also learned how to use the quadratic formula. After spring break we will be taking the Chapter 8 test. Please make sure the students review and look over the Practice Test I gave them. In Pre-Algebra we are working on a unit dealing with Volume and Surface Area. We have looked at how to calculate it for rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders. Shortly after break we will also be having an exam, which will cover these topics along with the Pythagorean Theorem. Lee Chow mchow@sd27j.org 303-655-4030 Social Studies - Team 8A Social Studies classes will be delving into the accomplishments of the early American presidents and the history surrounding them. We will explore the Jeffersonian Era, the Monroe Doctrine, Madison and the War of 1812, and Jackson Era. We will end the year with the Civil War. We will complete two projects, so watch for homework and special activities. Continue to actively participate in your student’s education and take part in his/her education. Colleen Heitman cheitman@sd27j.org 303-655-4018 Overland Tales Page 5 TEAM 8B The big news for seventh and eighth grade Science is the Whoa! Dude! Science EXPO is coming on Thursday, April 22nd 2010 and students are working on their projects. All 7th and 8th grade students will be working over Spring Break to get experiments going and type up their background research and experimental procedures. Some students may be researching a process or making an invention, and their research will be longer and more detailed. Mrs. Gillmore’s 8th grade students can show you the requirements on our new website; edu20. http://sd27joverland.edu20.org/site Happy experimenting! Choir News The final choir concert of the school year will be May 11th at 7:00 p.m. The OTMS Honor Choir will be competing at the Cavalcade of Music Festival at Elitch Gardens on May 13th.
