George Washington Notes: Political Parties In his farewell speech, he said that they should make sure they don’t get too caught up with their opinions. He said that they should always remember that even though they are from different political parties, they still share habits and religions. He warned everyone that blood should not be shed because of the differences between the parties. He said that the parties were made to keep peace and prevent a monarchy. Foreign Affairs Alexander Hamilton and George Washington came up with the Jay Trade so they could be able to trade with Great Britain, evacuate them from their forts, and get paid back the financial debt. In his farewell address, Washington warned against foreign affairs and being associated with Europe’s affairs. He sent Americans overseas so they could negotiate with other counties. He set certain principals that guided Americans through foreign policies through many years. During the revolution, America signed a treaty with France, which later helped with time of war. John Adams Notes: Alien-Sedition Act They were four bills passed by Federalists after the French Revolution and during the Quasi-War. John Adams signed them when he was President. It was said that the laws were passed to make life harder for the Republicans because they were the Federalists enemy’s. Three laws were aimed toward illegal immigrants (aliens). The first law made it so that it would take more time to become a US citizen. These laws were considered ‘criminal’ because it was intended to destroy the government. Relates to Bill of Rights because every want to be citizen should have equal rights. The laws were never enforced. It was also made to punish the newspaper editors who wrote bad things about Adams in their papers. Thomas Jefferson Notes: Louisiana Territory Purchase It was when the US purchased 828,000 square miles from France to have the state of Louisiana. It was Americas first time when they could buy more land. The US wanted the area near New Orleans because farmers had to go down to the port to get their crops to the market. It was purchased in 1803. When Jefferson was President, he understood that it was hard on the famers to go all that way to sell crops. In 1803, Jefferson sent James Monroe to France to offer the French a bargain for Louisiana. He offered the French 7.5 million dollars in return for the state. Frances leader, Napoleon wanted to turn Louisiana into a salve farm, but his plans had been changed when a slave protested and defeated the French troops. On April 30th, 1803, Napoleon signed Louisiana over to James Monroe for 15 million dollars. James Madison Notes: War of 1812 Madison wanted to end not being involved with foreign affairs, so he made Congress declare war on Britain. America only had 7,000 men, navy, and 16 ships. Madison had to run away from the White House because the British troops invaded Washington. The US gained Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The US had tried to do trade with France, and at the time France was at war with Britain. There was no winner of the War. Napoleon had defeated been defeated in Europe, so Britain could send troops to Canada. Madison thought the US could claim Canada, but the British were after it also. James Monroe Notes: Monroe Doctrine It was a policy made by President Monroe in 1823. It said that any acts that Europe made to interfere with North or South America would be viewed as threats. The British had agreed with the Doctrine. The effects on the Latin Americans with the Doctrine were positive. They were all happy about it, including one leader named Simon Bolivar. This could affect our world today because it means that the Europeans have to be careful about what they do and say to the US and South America. Lots of Latin Americans have come to regret the Doctrine.
