2014-2015 PARENT INFORMATION PACKET Parents and Students, Welcome to my class! I am looking forward to a wonderful school year. I am very excited to have your child in my class this year. In this packet I have outlined some important information for our school year together. I hope you find this information helpful. As the school year progresses I will keep parents informed of new things. I’d like to give you a little information about myself. This is my 9th year teaching 3rd grade. I had a great year last year and I am looking forward to an even better year this year. I have been married for 10 years to my wife, Tanya. My oldest daughter, Izabelle, will be attending 2nd grade this year. I am very excited to have her here at Broadway! My youngest daughter, Reese, just turned 5. I love being a dad. I am coaching Varsity boy’s golf and Varsity girl’s basketball for Tipp. I love basketball. I played at Dayton Christian for 4 years and at Grace College for 3 years. I graduated from Grace College in 2006. I completed my Masters in education in 2009 from Wright State University. I am a huge Ohio State fan (as you can tell from my room). GO BUCKS!!! I am looking forward to a great year. Always feel free to email or call with any questions or concerns. My email address is ajackson@tippcity.k12.oh.us. My school phone is 6674629. My home number is 902-5140. Please don’t hesitate to call with homework questions if your child is struggling. I want your child to understand and excel in 3rd grade. Sincerely, Mr. Jackson Parents, Throughout the year your child will need to accumulate AR points. Once your child completes an AR book he/she will be able to take an AR quiz in class. I have leveled my library this year and each book have the reading level along with the AR quiz number and amount of points your child can earn on the inside. Please encourage your child to read DAILY!! They need to accumulate 2 AR points each nine weeks. Mr. G has a lot of fun rewards for high AR point earners. This year we will be doing something a little different for our class book reports. Each month I will assign a genre of book (ie.. fiction, nonfiction) and your student will have some type of book report to do that month. I am looking forward to introducing creative ways to do book reports and making them fun for the kids. I will send home a letter of instruction every month for what type of book report to do. Homework Policy Please check your child’s agenda every night for homework and check to make sure they have completed all work. I f your child receives a D or below on any homework, I will send it home with a REDO across the top. This simply means your child has a chance to redo the assignment for a better grade. Each student can earn up to a B+ on each redo. I do this because I want my students to excel and understand what we are learning. I don’t want my students to fail. If your child has missing work, I will give 10 days from the due date to complete the assignment. After 10 days a zero will be recorded. We will keep track of missing work on the side board. Any student with missing work will stay in at recess until all work is completed and turned in. I give plenty of class time to complete homework. If your student is using their time wisely they should not have much work to do at home or have homework on a regular basis. Thank you for your help. Spelling Activities Each week we will do a spelling activity packet. We do an activity with our words Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for a total of 3 activities each week. Then on Thursday we take our pre-test and on Friday our test. The activities are our way of practicing at school. The students need to keep each activity in their spelling folder until Friday when they will all be collected. If a student does not finish in class they need to finish it before Friday. Activities have included 3 times each o 2 in cursive 1 in print Rainbow words o Each letter is a different color (Once in cursive once in print) Magazine words o We cut letters out of magazines and glue them onto a different sheet o We only do this for 10 words on our list (Students choice) Code words o Make different codes for each letter and spell the words out in code Pyramid words o 1 letter then 2 then 3 then 4 etc until you spell the entire word then you start taking letters off until the word is done. The words make a shape of a pyramid Picture words o Students draw pictures for 10 of the words on their list Silly sentence o Students use spelling words in sentences and try to make them funny Opposite hand o Students use their opposite hand to write out their spelling words 2 times o This slows them down and makes them think about each letter Telephone words o Students use the numbers and letters on the telephone to spell their words out by number Word search o We made a word search and find out of our spelling words My Webpage I have a webpage through our school site http://www.tippcityschools.com/Domain/368 will take you to my main page or just go to http://www.tippcityschools.com click on our schools, find Broadway’s page and find me under staff. I try to keep this page up to date. All the information you are receiving tonight will be on my page all year. This is the page to go to for any e-day assignments. I have tried to include any information I think you will need. It has our special schedule, homework policy, book report due dates and categories, and spelling information. I try to add photos of all of our field trips as well. I also try to send home an electronic weekly newsletter. These get emailed most Fridays unless we have a very busy day or are on a field trip. This is a great way to keep informed. If you would like to see anything else added to the webpage I am always open to ideas and suggestions. Thanks! Jersey Fridays Every Friday I will be wearing a different jersey, unless I am required to wear something else. If your child would like to join me by wearing their favorite jerseys or sports apparel, that would be great!! Birthday Celebrations Your child is welcome to bring in a treat on their birthday. If their birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, they may bring their treat in either Friday or Monday. If your child has a summer birthday and would still like to celebrate at school, they can use their half birthday and bring in treats. Please don’t feel obligated to send treats. This is only if you would like to. Checkbooks Throughout the year your child will be holding jobs in the classroom. They will also be paid for doing their jobs. I am attaching the list of times they can buy from “the store”. Your child will also be able to earn Jackson dollars with their grades. Every star they get on any paper goes towards Jackson dollars.
