KAMINCO and Abatement
(Scrubbing) Technology
This topic concerns the optimum Environmental and
Economical among solutions to radically reduce ships
responsibility for the SULPHUR OXIDES Emissions, and
not only.
Up-to-date KAMINCO has fitted more than 700 Tankers
with IG Systems since 1978, including retrofits on Greek
and Foreign Tankers, supervised and commissioned.
This means KAMINCO knows for what it is talking about
by referring to Abatement (Scrubbing) Technology.

COMPLIANCE WITH MARPOL Annex VI
Abatement (Scrubbing) Technology
WOULD WORLD SUSTAIN 60% INCREASE OF LIVING COST ?
The multi challenged World and particularly the European Economy
would be in jeopardy in case the transportation cost of goods by ships,
70% - 90%, would be raised by up to 40 - 60%, should ships Diesel
engines be transmuted to burn twice as costly distillate fuels instead of
using SCRUBBERS type EcoSilencer®.
The time margins for preventing our Planet’s entire catastrophe by
choking it with enormous Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from the
distillation of fuels, and/or by triggering of an “outside doors III World
War” because of uncontrolled increasing cost of life, which would
follow an accidental doubling of ships fuels prices, are minimal.
HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST WITHOUT SCRUBBERS
The extra cost from a hypothetical operation of 50.000 ships with an
average consumption of 10.000 tons/year per ship of distillate fuels,
it is calculated to an average minimum extra amount of USD 3.000.000
as from today’s premium of distillate fuels of USD 300 / ton.
To this must add about USD 800.000 for extra engine maintenance
repairs due to lack of sufficient sulphur in the distillate fuels and poor
Lubrication due to lack of sufficient Sulphur in the fuels.
To this cost must add and the Refineries profit for amortizing their
additional new installations for producing the 360 million tons would
be required per year should an erroneous generalization of distillate
fuels happen, plus their profit for a periodical renewing of those
installations within certain periods.
• The total amount to be overcharged, spread to over 40 years, which
is the anticipated time to complete refinery installations for producing
the 360 million tons / year, it is estimated to be threefold of
amortization cost per ton.
• The amortization cost is estimated to $ 14 per ton x 3 = $ 42, to be
added to the premium per ton of distillate fuels of e.g., $ 300,
making an extra cost per ship/year of :
• $ 342 x 10.000 ton = $ 3.420.000 + $ 800.000 = $ 4.220.000 ,
on top of today’s running cost per ship/year.
• This amount would far exceed the cost of an EcoSilencer® , which
will last throughout the life of a ship with minor operational
expenses, in full compliance to MARPOL Annex VI.
BURDENING LIFE COST AND ENVIRONMENT SAFETY
On the other hand, the extra yearly cost of USD 211.000.000.000
on the operation of estimated 50.000 ships with distillate fuels, plus an
unavoidable Environmental Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Responsibility
Taxation on SHIPPING, it would burden by 40 – 60 % the
CONSUMERS of the 70% - 90% of goods being transported by Ships.
As the distillate fuels would be burned by ships, it would be handy to be
taxed as responsible for the Carbon Dioxide produced during the
distillation processes, while the catastrophic results would eventually
turn against “the Cost of Life and the Safety of Environment”.
The consequences from the emanated social and political disturbances
would be easily imaginable from such an iniquitous burdening of cost of
life due to extra cost of distillate fuels, whereas the Enormous
accumulations of Carbon Dioxide from the distillation of fuels would
strengthen the Greenhouse, where they would remain for tens of
thousands of years for accelerating its catastrophic effects on Earth.
IN A CROSS - ROADS FOR PRUDENT DECISIONS
The prudent Ship Owners, Members of Committees and Legislators
have the privilege as long as they stand in the cross-roads of decisions
to estimate correctly above worldwide risks and consequences before
their respected thoughts and decisions are ripe enough to correctly
evaluate the advantages of Abatement (Scrubber) Technology with
criterion the well meant benefit of Humanity.
There is no doubt that IMO under the inspired leadership of its capable
Secretary-General will do their right again in ratifying MARPOL Annex
VI. Hopefully and the responsible Committees of the Environmental
Protection Agencies and the Legislators in the world will harmonize
their respective decisions in line with the undisputable sustainability of
MARPOL Annex VI, so as they could altogether withstand against
unrealistic industrial and political influences and pressures for unilateral
decisions, and enable Environment and International Economy
elevate as Forerunners.
Counterfeiting of rules would emanate misunderstandings and
confusion to the Maritime Community, resulting in delays of MARPOL
Annex VI implementation, and extensions of chances to opportunity
chasers against the Environment and Humanity.
30.000 SHIPS WILL BE FITTED WITH SCRUBBERS BY 2018
The gradually increasing enquiries for EcoSilencer® Scrubbing
Technology by forward-looking Ship Owners from the wider world
shipping community as well as the prompt cooperation by Far East
shipyards to incorporate the EcoSilencer® to their current designs of
new ships, are remarkable.
Consequent to anticipated extensions of SECA territories worldwide, it
is estimated that there must be a minimum of 30.000 ships equipped
with Exhaust Gas Cleaning Scrubbers by 2018.
At present and until MARPOL Annex VI is to be ratified by April 2008,
and finalized by Autumn 2008 , it will be more convenient and
incidentally cheaper for the Ship Owners in making a provision during
the drawings approval of their new building projects, to incorporate and
an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System installation.
For retrofits, the pre-engineering on the ships could facilitate the
readiness of prefabricated and pre-fitted systems to be installed during
a next dry docking, and we shall be pleased to assist.
Thank you for your
kind attention.
