2014-2015 Committee Report



















Biannual Meeting Dates: October 21, 2014 and March 31, 2015
The college was named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
(one of only 33 community colleges in the nation to receive this designation). An application for the
2015 Honor Roll has been submitted.
Conferences and Presentations of “Building and Sustaining a Community College Service-Learning
Program: The Journey of one Community College” (funded by Title III):
 Sherry Holloway, Kelly Ormsby, Jana Pankey, Nancy Thomas, Susan Webb-Curtis, and Kourtney
Yonge presented at the 2014 National Points of Light Conference on Volunteering in Atlanta;
featured service-learning projects developed and implanted by Ormsby, Pankey, and Thomas.
 Sherry Holloway at the Community Colleges of Appalachia Annual Conference.
 Susan Webb-Curtis and Sherry Holloway presented at the Gulf South Summit on S-L and Civic
Engagement and facilitated round table discussion on community colleges.
Susan Webb-Curtis attended TNCC Strategic Planning Meeting at University of the South Sewanee.
Sherry Holloway is serving on TBR High Impact Practice group for Service-Learning.
Dr. Denise King and Sherry Holloway participated in TNCC Day on the Hill; interacted with elected
officials regarding the importance of TNCC and Service-Learning.
The Service-Learning Team continues to work with the CSCC Marketing Department to develop a
Service-Learning sales kit for community agencies and faculty. Also under development in
conjunction with marketing is a re-branding effort for the program brochure, webpage, faculty
handbook, universal service-learning plan, and other materials. (Title III funds)
The Service-Learning Team worked with the CSCC Media Team and The Bingham Group of Knoxville
to update the Service-Learning recruitment/public relations video; replaced Dr. Hite’s comments
with comments from Dr. Seymour.
Title III funds were designated and invested in Service-Learning projects for Victoria Bryan, Ann
Cunningham, Debbie Felton, Jana Pankey, and Kelly Ormsby (Service-Learning Champion Stipend)
Kelly Ormsby, Associate Professor English/Learning Support was voted 2014 Service-Learning
Champion by faculty colleagues; received an award and a $1000 project stipend.
The Service-Learning Advisory Council supported the Spring 2015 Service-Learning Program by
leading faculty colleagues through workshop activities.
Sherry Holloway and faculty presented Service-Learning at civic club meetings throughout the spring
and summer2015 using faculty posters/displays from spring service-learning program.
Service-Learning Advisory Council, SLE students, and community partners provided input (at Dr.
Mani Hull’s request) for the National Campus Compact’s 30th Anniversary Action Statement.
Service-Learning Advisory Council streamlined the Service-Learning Mission Statement.
Conducted an advisory council review; option to remain or leave. Ron Paige vacated a seat. Kelly
Ormsby and Allan Gentry vacated seats when they left CSCC. Chuck Barkley and Donna Brogdon joined.
Agency council member, Matt Ryerson, President/CEO United Way Bradley County replaced himself on
the council with Jaynese Waddell, Director of Volunteer Services, United Way of Bradley County.
Service-Learning Advisory Council presented an award of recognition to Sherry Marlow, Title III
Coordinator, who accepted position with UTC. HR panel selected Dr. Ken Phillips as her replacement.
2014 Seeds of Service newsletter distributed.
